When using Active Directory account creation mode, you need to define an organizational unit where Windows SharePoint Services can create new user accounts. All Windows SharePoint Services user accounts from the same server or server farm will reside in this organizational unit. Conversely, no accounts other than SharePoint user accounts should reside in the organizational unit that Account Creation mode uses. For example, none of the following accounts should reside there:

Accounts such as these need significantly greater privileges than SharePoint user accounts. Keeping these account types in different organization units makes it much easer to control group policy and privileges. Tip Never add accounts manually to the organizational unit you designate for use by Active Directory Account Creation mode. Only allow the accounts that Windows SharePoint Services creates. Here s the procedure for creating an Active Directory organizational unit where Account Creation user accounts can reside.

In order for Windows SharePoint Services to have permissions to create accounts in the sharepoint_ou organizational unit, you must delegate the correct permissions to the application pool accounts for the content server and for the SharePoint Central Administration server. To do this, proceed as follows.
1 If Active Directory Users and Computers isn t already running, go to the Windows Start menu and then choose Programs, Administrative Tools, Active Directory Users And Computers. 2 Right-click the new organizational unit, and then choose Delegate Control from the shortcut menu.

Installing Windows SharePoint Services
This section explains how to install Windows SharePoint Services in the most common scenarios.
Installing Windows SharePoint Services with WMSDE
The simplest way of installing Windows SharePoint Services is on a single server, and using the WMSDE database. To do this, you simply run the setup program with all defaults. You should, however, be aware of these precautions:
During setup, in a default installation, Windows SharePoint Services extends the
default virtual server with Windows SharePoint Services. This doesn t delete or overwrite the server s existing content, but it does make that content inaccessible through the Web server.
If, however, the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions are running on the default virtual
server on port 80, running setup with all defaults won t extend that server with Windows SharePoint Services.
By default, the WMSDE database will reside at:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$SHAREPOINT
Downloading and Unpacking the Installation Files
The first step in installing Windows SharePoint Services is to download and unpack the installation files. Proceed as follows.
1 Download the setup program, STSV2.exe, to your computer. You can download STSV2.exe from the Downloads for SharePoint Products and Technologies page at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/downloads/sharepnt.mspx

Planning and Installing Windows SharePoint Services
Whether or not you click Cancel, a complete set of unpacked installation files will now reside at C:\Program Files\STS2Setup_1033, where 1033 is the Locale ID for your version of the setup program; 1033, for example, indicates US English.
