1 If this is your first installation, download and run the stsv2.exe program as directed in the section titled Downloading and Unpacking the Installation Files earlier in this chapter. If you previously downloaded and ran stsv2.exe, open the C:\Program Files\STS2Setup_1033 folder (where 1033 is your Locale ID) and doubleclick setupsts.exe. 2 When the End-User License Agreement wizard page appears, carefully review the terms laid forth. If you agree, select the check box titled I Accept The Terms In The License Agreement and then click Next. 3 When the Type of Installation wizard page shown previously in Figured 12-4 appears, make sure Server Farm is selected, and then click Next.

Create a new virtual server named SharePoint Central Administration, running on a randomly selected port number. This Web site configures SharePoint settings that apply to entire virtual servers or the entire computer. Open the Configure Administrative Virtual Server page shown in Figure 13-13. This is a page in the new SharePoint Central Administration site.

As setupsts.exe performs these steps, the screen will occasionally be devoid of SharePoint-related dialog boxes. In addition, command line windows will occasionally open and close. Your role in all this is to wait patiently until the Configure Administrative Virtual Server page appears in your browser.

Part V: Installing SharePoint at the Server
Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out After setupsts.exe completes, you must still perform the following tasks:
13 13 13 13 13 13
Configure your administrative virtual server. Connect the administration site to a configuration database. Extend one or more virtual servers with Windows SharePoint Services.
The next three sections will explain how to perform these tasks.
Configuring the Administrative Virtual Server
The first step in configuring the SharePoint Central Administration server is to specify an application pool and, as a consequence, a user account. To begin, make sure the Configure Administrative Virtual Server page is displayed in your browser. Its URL is: http://<server>:<port>/configadminvs.aspx where <server> is the Web server s DNS name or IP address, and <port> is a random number that setupsts.exe assigns during installation. Tip If you don t know the port number for a SharePoint Central Administration server, start IIS Manager and view the server s properties. The port number appears on the Web Site tab. The most secure (and therefore recommended) approach is to run the SharePoint Central Administration server in a new application pool using a dedicated account (that is, an account that serves no other purpose). To do this, proceed as follows:
1 In the Configure Administrative Virtual Server page shown previously in Figure 13-13, select the Create A New Application Pool option. 2 Type the name to use for the new application pool. 3 Specify whether to use a predefined or configurable security account for the application pool.
If you selected Predefined, select the security account to use. If you want Windows SharePoint Services to run under a predefined account but use SQL Server running on a different machine, chose the Network Service account for Windows SharePoint Services and grant the Web server s machine account the Security Administrators and Database Creators roles in SQL Server.
If you selected Configurable, type the user name and password to use. The account you use must be valid on the computer running Windows SharePoint Services and on each SQL Server computer that will host configuration or content databases. For that reason, it will usually be a domain account. In addition, that account must be a member of the Security Administrators and Database Creators roles on each of those SQL Servers.
