1 Browse the server s SharePoint Central Administration site. The URL will be: http://<server>:<port>/default.aspx where <server> is the server s DNS name or IP address, and <port> is a random number that setupsts.exe assigns during installation. 2 When the Central Administration page shown in Figure 13-16 appears, click Extend Or Upgrade Virtual Server.

Figure 13-16. This is the main menu page for a Windows SharePoint Services Central Administration server. The Extend Or Upgrade Virtual Server link begins the process of extending a virtual server with Windows SharePoint Services.
3 When the Virtual Server List page shown in Figure 13-17 appears, click the name of the virtual server you want to extend.

Figure 13-17. This page lists the virtual servers you can extend or upgrade with Windows SharePoint Services.
Note SharePoint Version 5 Indicates FrontPage Server Extensions In Figure 13-17, the Virtual Server List page shows the Default Web Site server as having a SharePoint version of 5.0.2.5012, and proposes an action of Upgrade.
In fact, any version number beginning with 5 or lower indicates the FrontPage Server Extensions, a configuration you can t directly upgrade. For more information about installing Windows SharePoint Services on a virtual server currently running the FrontPage Server Extensions, refer to the section titled Preserving FrontPage-Based Content earlier in this chapter.

4 When the Extend Virtual Server page shown in Figure 13-18 appears, under Provisioning Options, click Extend And Create A Content Database. The Extend And Map To Another Virtual Server link extends the virtual server but connects it to another virtual server s content database. Both virtual servers will then deliver the same content.

5 The Extend And Create A Content Database page shown in Figure 13-19 will be next to appear. When it does, in the Application Pool section, select either of the following: Use An Existing Application Pool The newly extended virtual server will run in the same pool with other processes. This means your new SharePoint virtual server will share security and crash exposure with those processes.
Other processes may have access to resources within your site. If another process brings down the pool, the SharePoint server you re extending will go down as well.
Create A New Application Pool The newly extended virtual server will run in its own pool. This is the recommended setting. However, if you choose this setting, you ll need to specify the name of the application pool, plus the user name and password that the pool will use. This user name is typically a domain account that has the Run As A Service right on the computer. However, it doesn t need to have database creation rights in SQL Server. The Central Administration server will create any necessary databases.
