Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out
7 Type the site owner s E-mail address in the E-Mail box. 8 In the Database Information section take one of these actions: Select the Use Default Content Database Server check box. Clear the Use Default Content Database Server check box, and then type the database server name and database name to use for a new content database. For a WMSDE database, this will be the computer name followed by the word SharePoint. For example: POST\SHAREPOINT. 9 In the Custom URL Path box, specify the location of the server s top-level Web site. The default (and normal choice) is to create the top-level Web site at the virtual server s root. 10 If you re using quotas, specify the quota template you want in the Quota Template section. 11 In the Site Language section, select the language you want to use. 12 Click OK. After a few moments, the Virtual Server Successfully Extended page shown in Figure 13-20 should appear.

Clicking the New Top-Level Web Site URL link on the Virtual Server Successfully Extended page will display the same Template Selection page that appears when you create a new SharePoint site any other way.

Planning and Installing Windows SharePoint Services
For more information about using the Template Selection page, refer to the section titled Selecting a Site Template, in 5.
Installing Windows SharePoint Services from the Command Line
In some situations, you may prefer to install Windows SharePoint Services using the command-line program stsadm.exe. from the command line. This might be attractive if, for example:
You want to use scalable hosting mode. The SharePoint Central Administration
Web pages don t provide all the options you need to complete this type of installation.
You want to develop a batch file or script that repeats the installation on multiple
computers. The steps for installing Windows SharePoint Services from the command largely parallel those for installing it using the Web pages. Subsequent sections will explain each of these steps:
Specify the host name for the first site (scalable hosting mode only). Create a site.
Installing Windows SharePoint Services without WMSDE
To use Active Directory Account Creation mode, you must install Windows SharePoint Services without installing WMSDE. To do this, follow the procedure in the section titled Installing Windows SharePoint Services Without Installing WMSDE earlier in this chapter. However:
When creating the administrative virtual server s application pool, specify that its
application pool run under the account you created when you prepared the domain controller.
Don t continue into the subsequent sections, such as, Configuring the Administrative
Virtual Server.
13
Instead, return to this point and continue by using the command-line operations that next few sections will describe.

Creating the Administration Virtual Server Application Pool

Unfortunately, the Web pages in the Central Administration site don t provide all the options you need to configure a physical server to operate in Host-Header (that is, Scalable Hosting) mode. Instead, you must do the job using a command-line utility named stsadm.exe. The Windows SharePoint Services setup program, setupsts.exe, installs stsadm.exe in the following folder: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\BIN\ To use this program you should either change to that folder or add the folder name to your path environment variable.
Modify Your Path Setting To change your path environment variable on Windows Server 2003, click Start, Control Panel, System, Advanced, Environment Variables, and then create or modify a path variable in the User Variables frame. Windows will append the user path to the system path the next time you log on.
To create the Central Administration server, assign a new application pool, and specify an application pool account and password, you run stsadm.exe with the -o setadminport option. The complete syntax appears below. Of course, to actually run the command, you would type it as one long line.
stsadm.exe -o setadminport -port <port> -admapcreatenew -admapidname <apppoolid> -admapidtype configurableid -admapidlogin <domain\account> -admapidpwd <password>
The variable arguments for this form of the stsadm.exe command are:
