Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out
Backing Up and Restoring Sites with stsadm.exe
Windows SharePoint services comes with a command-line program that can back up and restore one site collection at a time. There are several advantages to using this program:
It works with any kind of database. Each backup file represents one site collection. This divides the backup into
manageable units of content.
Each backup creates a single file in the server s file system. This file retains all the sites

in the collection, including all Web pages, all files in document libraries, all lists, and all security, permission, and feature settings.
A restored backup can replace the original collection, or create a new one.
Replacing a collection is more appropriate if someone accidentally deleted it, or the collection became hopelessly corrupted. Restoring to a new location is more appropriate if you only want to recover selected content. Team members will be able to access both the original and restored sites, and therefore recover just the information they need.
Because stsadm.exe is a command-line program, you can run it in batch files or scripts.
In addition, you can run the program itself, batch files that call it, or scripts that call it from Windows Scheduler. Of course, there are limitations to the stsadm.exe backup/restore method as well. They are:
Each time you run stsadm.exe, you must back up or restore exactly one site collection:
that is, exactly one top-level site and all its subsites. You can t back up or restore an entire server, nor can you back up or restore a single subsite. Of course, if your server contains 10, 100, or 1000 top-level sites, you can run stsadm.exe 10, 100, or 1000 times to take all the backups.
Backup and restore operations are inherently memory-intensive, processor-intensive,
and disk-intensive. If you choose to schedule automatic backups, make sure they run during periods of least usage.
To perform backups or restores using the stsadm.exe program, you must have an
account that s one of the following:
A member of the physical server s Administrators group A member of the SharePoint Administrators group
Stsadm.exe backup and restore is generally the best method for moving a Windows
SharePoint Services site from one server to another. However:
To migrate a SharePoint Team Services 1.0 site to Windows SharePoint Services, or to create backup files compatible with FrontPage 2003, use the Microsoft SharePoint Migration Tool, smigrate.exe. To back up or restore team or personal sites on a machine running SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you should use the spsbackup.exe utility for disaster recovery or portal-specific needs, and smigrate.exe to export, import, or migrate personal or team sites.
Part V. Installing SharePoint at the Server
Backing Up, Restoring, and Migrating SharePoint Sites
The stsadm.exe program won t restore a like-named collection from a different server.
Suppose, for example, that:
Servers Budapest and Djakarta both contain site collections named sites/bart. You run stsadm.exe and back up http://budapest.example.com/sites/bart.
You run stsadm, exe again and try to restore http://djakarta.example.com/sites/bart.
The restore won t replace the sites/bart collection on Djakarta because the sites/bart collection in the backup file came from a different server. language packs. Otherwise, team members who browse the collection will receive a File Not Found error.
If you back up a collection on a server that s running in Active Directory Account

To successfully restore a site, the receiving server must provide the appropriate
Creation mode, you must restore it to a server that s running in Active Directory Account Creation mode. The converse is also true. If you back up a collection from a server that s not running in Active Directory Account Creation mode, you can t restore it to a server that is running in Active Directory Account Creation mode. running both collections simultaneously. This is because:
Team members who have access to the original site have equal access to the

restored site.
Any user management you perform on one site will apply to the other site.
When deleting either the original or restored collection from a site running in Active
14
Directory Account Creation mode, use the stsadm.exe program and specify the -deleteadaccounts false option. Otherwise, as the second sub-bullet just above warned you, all the team members will disappear from both sites. Here s an example:
stsadm.exe -o deletesite -url http://budapest.example.com/restores/bart -deleteadaccounts false
To determine if a SharePoint server is running in Active Directory Account Creation mode, open a command prompt on the server, type the following command, and then press Enter:
stsadm.exe -o getproperty -pn createadaccounts
A response of <Property Exist="Yes" Value="Yes" /> indicates that Windows SharePoint Services is in Active Directory Account Creation mode. A response of <Property Exist="Yes" Value="No" /> indicates that Windows SharePoint Services is not in Active Directory Account Creation mode.
