You can migrate a site to a new virtual server, to a new top-level Web site on an existing virtual server, or to a subsite under an existing top-level Web site. Before you restore a site, however, you must create a blank site at the destination. That is, you must create the site without applying a site template. To do this, use your browser to create a site in the usual way, but when the Template Selection page appears, simply close the browser window without applying any template (not even the Blank Site template). Otherwise, the restore operation will fail.
For more information about creating a new virtual server, refer to Extending Or Upgrading a Virtual Server in 15. For more information about creating sites, refer to Creating a New SharePoint Site in 5.
Before you migrate a site, make sure that all the settings in the destination site are correct. Remember that if smigrate.exe can t verify a domain user account, and you re not using Active Directory Account Creation mode, smigrate.exe won t restore the account. To actually restore a site, you run smigrate.exe with the following parameters:
smigrate.exe -r -w <Web_site_URL> -f <backup_filename> [-u <username> -pw <password>]
For example, to restore the above site to http://kingston.example.com/taxi, you would type the following:
smigrate.exe -r -w http://kingston.example.com/taxi -f c:\backup.fwp
If you re logged on with an account that doesn t have specific permissions to the destination Web site, you can specify a site administrator user name and password that has the appropriate permissions. For example, to restore a site and specify the administrator user name and password, you would use the following syntax:
14
14
14
14
If the site s URL contains any spaces, enclose the URL in quotation marks ("). For example, to backup http://kathmandu.example.com/hotel deals, type:
Part V. Installing SharePoint at the Server
Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out
smigrate.exe -r -w <Web_site_URL> -f <backup_filename> -u <admin_account> -pw <password>
After running any restore, you should view the smigrate.log file to see which items migrated successfully and which didn t. The smigrate.log file is stored in the %temp% directory for your user account. If a log file already exists from a previous backup or restore, a log file will be created using the next available name (such as smigrate_1.log, smigrate_2.log, and so on).

If you re using the SharePoint Migration Tool to migrate and upgrade a site from SharePoint Team Services v1.0 or FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions to Windows SharePoint Services, be aware that several features or types of customizations supported in those environments won t migrate properly or won t work in a migrated site.
For a list of items that you must re-create or work around, see Upgrade Considerations in the Windows SharePoint Services Administrator s Guide. This page is available online at http://www.microsoft.com/ resources/documentation/wss/2/all/adminguide/en-us/stsb04.mspx.
If you re upgrading from SharePoint Team Services v1.0 to Windows SharePoint Services, you can also specify whether to migrate the security settings for the site. Security settings, in this sense, means all of the following:
The list of user roles and associated rights The list of user accounts and role membership The anonymous access settings The setting for inherited or unique permissions for the site
If you backed up a SharePoint Team Services v1.0 site, and you want to restore it to a server running Windows SharePoint Services, and you want to exclude security information such as user accounts and site groups, run smigrate.exe with the x parameter as shown below:
