This doesn t need to be a Microsoft Exchange server; it can be any SMTP server that relays mail. From E-Mail Address Specify the e-mail address that will appear in the From Address field of each message. Reply-To E-Mail Address Specify the e-mail address that will appear in the To Address if a team member replies to mail from the SharePoint server. Character Set Specify the character set to use in the body of each mail message. The default character set is 65001 (Unicode UTF-8), a standard character set that works well for most languages. If you choose a specific language code, such as 1256 (Arabic (Windows)), the text is less likely to appear correctly in mail readers configured for other languages. 3 Click OK to make a change, or Cancel to quit without saving. It s your responsibility to find and specify a server that accepts mail from Windows SharePoint Services. Because of efforts to control unsolicited e-mail (spam), this may be more difficult than you suspect. Very few mail servers, especially on the Internet, accept and relay (that is, forward) mail from unidentified senders. Here are some typical policies that SMTP administrators enforce: The sender s computer must have an address on the organization s network. The organization, in this sense, may be a company, a government agency, or a public DSL or cable modem provider. The From address, or at least the domain portion of the From address, must be known to the service provider. The mail server may require authentication before accepting mail. The first two policies are relatively easy to accommodate; just make sure your SharePoint server has an acceptable IP address, and that you specify a suitable From address. The third is more difficult because Windows SharePoint Services doesn t have a way to configure a username and password for outgoing mail. If your provider won t relax this policy, you may need to find another provider. Internet Information Services (IIS) includes an SMTP server that works with Windows SharePoint Services. However: It s not part of the default configuration. You must specifically install it. You must configure it to allow anonymous access, which isn t the default. You must configure it to permit e-mail relaying, which isn t the default. For more information about the IIS SMTP service, refer to the Help system for IIS Manager. 15 15 15 15 15
Configuring an HTML Viewer Service
If your SharePoint server has Web visitors who don t have Microsoft Office 2003 installed on their computers, but who need to view the content of Office 97 or later Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files, the HTML Viewer service may provide an answer. This service: 1 Receives Office 97 or later documents over the network. 2 Translates them to HTML using filters that come with Office 2003. 3 Sends the resulting HTML version back to the originating server for retransmission to the Web visitor. To perform these translations, the HTML Viewer service uses translation filters that come with Office 2003. Therefore, a copy of Office 2003 must be installed on the computer running the HTML Viewer service. Microsoft recommends installing the HTML Viewer service on a computer running Windows XP Professional, with the .NET Framework installed. However, it also runs acceptably on Windows Server 2003. 486
