Introducing Document, Picture, and Form Libraries
Document libraries and picture libraries are also lists, but they have a document attached to each record. A single SharePoint site can have any number of document or picture libraries. Note Server administrators can assign quotas that limit the amount of disk space a SharePoint site consumes. When a team member adds an item to a document library, the team member can either create a new document or upload an existing one.
If the team member chooses to create a new document, Windows SharePoint Services
will download a template file, the team member s PC will start the required Office program, and that program s Save command will upload the completed file into the SharePoint library.
If the team member chooses to upload an existing document, Windows SharePoint
Services displays an HTML form that contains a typical file upload control. You can store whatever information you d like about the content of a SharePoint library. Windows SharePoint Services captures some of this information automatically, such as the identity of the team member who uploaded the file and the date and time the upload occurred. The Shared Documents page shown in Figure 1-5 is a typical listing of the default document library.

A SharePoint site can accommodate any number of document libraries like
Like document libraries, picture libraries are basically lists that have a file attached to each record. Of course, in the case of a picture library, the file will be a photograph or drawing. As shown in Figure 1-7, the Web pages that display picture libraries have options to display the library contents visually.
For more information about using a Team Site, refer to 3, Using SharePoint Built-In Features.
A SharePoint form library is similar to a document library, but its default template is an electronic form compatible with Microsoft InfoPath. To fill out the form, team members click the form library s Fill Out This Form button. The SharePoint site then downloads the template and starts InfoPath on the member s computer. To submit the form, the team member saves it from InfoPath into the form library. Each form submission therefore creates one document in the library. Form libraries have special features to extract information from these documents and display it as columns in the library listing. Furthermore, InfoPath has features to download multiple forms and summarize their content.

If you want to store additional information, such as a project task number, keywords, or a product number for each document, you can add fields for these purposes just as you would for any other list. The Create New Column page shown in Figure 1-6 shows this operation in progress. To display this page, you would click the Modify Settings And Columns link in Figure 1-5, and then, under Columns, click Add New Column.

Introducing Web Parts, Web Part Pages, and Web Part Zones
It should be obvious by now that SharePoint sites contain very little static HTML. Instead, software on the server customizes each page based on the Web site s configuration, each team member s preferences, the content of libraries and lists, and other factors. Less obviously, much of this software isn t tied to specific Web pages. Instead, it consists of software modules called Web Parts. A Web Part occupies a portion of a page and displays its output in that portion. Windows SharePoint Services comes with a variety of useful Web Parts. If that s not enough, you can download more Web Parts from Microsoft or third-party Web sites, or you can write your own. Note In Figure 1-1, the areas titled Announcements, Events, and Links are List View Web Parts. An Image Web Part displays the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services logo. Web pages that contain Web Parts are called, logically enough, Web Part Pages. The Web Parts themselves are ASP.NET custom controls, and Web Part Pages must therefore be ASP.NET pages. That is, they must have a filename extension of .aspx. A Web Part Zone is a container that encloses any number of Web Parts. A Web designer can add Web Parts to a page without putting them in Web Part Zones, but this stops team members from adding, removing, or rearranging the Web Parts on their personal view of the page. Note
Some Web Part Pages support a feature called personalization that can store a different arrangement of Web Parts for each team member. On a team site home page, members can switch between the shared (default) view and their personal view by clicking the Modify My Page or Modify Shared Page drop-down arrow and then choosing Shared View or Personal View from the resulting menu.
