An application pool is basically a memory space. If two processes are running in the same application pool, they have more opportunity to interfere with each other than if they were running in separate application pools. However, creating too many application pools can degrade overall system performance.

When SharePoint locks a site for exceeding its storage quota limit, users who attempt to upload new content will receive a disk full error message. Site administrators can clear locks of this type. When a server administrator manually locks a site, users who attempt to view the site will see an access denied message. Only a server administrator can clear such a lock.

Introducing the Windows SharePoint Services Architecture
1
The following topics briefly introduce the internal structure of Windows SharePoint Services. The rest of the book will touch and expand on these topics many times over.
Introducing Server Components
At the highest level, the design of Windows SharePoint Services involves two components:
A Front-End Communication Service
This must be Internet Information Service 6.0
1
(IIS6).
A Back-End Data Store
This must be either Windows Microsoft Data Engine (WMSDE) or Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP3 or later.
Note
WMSDE is a limited version of SQL Server that comes free with Windows SharePoint Services. It has very few management tools; it doesn t accept network connections except from the local machine, and it doesn t support full-text searching. Nevertheless, it s an economical solution for small sites and system development.
Every SharePoint server makes use of at least two databases. These databases serve quite different purposes.
A configuration database stores site settings and configuration information. A content database serves as the file system for Web pages, pictures files, lists, tasks,
contacts, events, document libraries, picture libraries, and all the other types of content that make up a SharePoint site. Note
A SharePoint site makes very little use of the normal Windows file system. Except for centralized software libraries and template files, everything goes into a database.
1
Because of the way it uses IIS and SQL Server, Windows SharePoint Services is extremely scalable. If demand warrants, you can provide server farms of IIS servers to handle the communication, and multiple, optionally clustered SQL Servers to handle the data storage. This provides nearly unlimited capacity and fault tolerance. Windows SharePoint services load-balances SQL Servers by distributing Web sites among them. For example, you can specify that the first 10,000 sites on a virtual server reside on one database server, the next 10,000 sites on a different database server, and so forth. Even running a farm of Web servers, no confusion results because the configuration database directs each Web server to the correct SQL Server for a given site. 37

Part I: Overview and Concepts
Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out If your needs are more modest, a single computer can run Windows SharePoint Services on up to ten virtual servers, even with the database running on the same machine. The best configuration for your company depends on the activity level your users generate. Figure 1-25 shows just a few of the many possible configurations.
