You can create as many areas as you want, and nest them to any depth.
There s an art to designing an area structure, or for that matter, a hierarchy of any kind. If you create too many areas or arrange them illogically, the portal users will lose their way and never find the content they need. If you create too few, each area will contain too much content, and the portal users will end up looking for needles in haystacks.
The drop-down list that appears when you move the mouse over an area name in the Portal Site Map page also provides these options:
Edit
Delete
Deletes the area from the site map and all navigation bars.
2
Displays a page with five tabs of options pertaining to the area: General, Publishing, Page, Display, and Search. With these you can change the area s title, description, dates, approval requirements, display template, display options, inclusion or exclusion from full text search results, and so forth.
2
For these reasons, most organizations assign the task of creating and managing areas to librarians or subject matter experts outside the IT department.

Part I: Overview and Concepts
Introducing SharePoint Portal Server Note Groups organize content within an area or subarea When you add a listing to an area or subarea, SharePoint Portal Server requires that you assign a group name to the listing.
Then, when SharePoint Portal Server displays the contents of an area or subarea, it sorts the listings by group and displays a heading for each group. The default groups are General, Highlights, and Experts, but you can define as many group names you want.
Once you ve added a listing to an area, it will appear on the Portal Site Map page, provided you set the Show drop-down list to All. To review and modify additional settings:
1 Pass the mouse pointer over the new listing, so a drop-down list appears. 2 Choose Edit in the drop-down list. 3 When the Change Settings page appears, click the General, Publishing, Display, or Search tab and set the options you want.
