Specifies a location where Windows SharePoint Services starts to manage folders and files. If an administrator configured /depts as a managed include path, any files and folder within that location:
Would have SharePoint capabilities and restrictions. SharePoint sites could reside there, for example, but ASP and ASP.NET pages wouldn t run. Means that SharePoint manages all paths subordinate to the Means that SharePoint manages only the specific path you specify.
In addition, an included managed path can be wildcard or explicit.
Wildcard Inclusion
specified path.
Explicit Inclusion
If you look closely at the Included Paths section of Figure 5-1, you ll see that the sites and depts folders are both managed paths, even though they reside within the root path (which is always included). Windows SharePoint Services would manage these paths anyway, but declaring them as managed paths makes it possible to create top-level sites there. 143

Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out A new SharePoint server has two managed paths: the root path and /sites/. A server administrator can delete the /sites/ managed path and create others based on need. Keep in mind, however, that Windows SharePoint Services needs to check every incoming request against the list of managed paths. Setting up too many managed paths can lead to a noticeable loss of performance.
Creating a New SharePoint Site
Earlier chapters have explained how Microsoft Office programs can create certain kinds of sites, such as document workspaces and meeting workspaces. This section explains the more general procedure for using a browser to create SharePoint sites of any kind.

Displaying the New SharePoint Site Page
The first step in creating a new SharePoint site is to display the New SharePoint Site page. There are several ways of doing this, and here s the first:
1 Open the existing SharePoint site that will be the new site s parent. 2 Choose Create on the parent site s top navigation bar. 3 Scroll to the bottom of the Create page as shown in Figure 5-2. Then, under Web Pages, click the Sites And Workspaces link. This will display the New SharePoint Site page that the next section describes.
Figure 5-2. To create a new site, click the Create link on any page in its parent, and then click the Sites And Workspaces link shown here.

Creating SharePoint Sites and Pages If you prefer, you can also use the site s administration pages to display the New SharePoint Site page. Here s that procedure.
1 Open the existing SharePoint site that will be the new site s parent. 2 Click the Site Settings link in the top navigation bar of any page. 3 On the Site Settings page, under Administration, click Manage Sites And Workspaces. This displays the Manage Sites And Workspaces page shown in Figure 5-3.

4 Click the Create button in the Sites And Workspaces toolbar. This will display the New SharePoint Site page that the next section describes.

Completing the New SharePoint Site Page
The previous section explained how to display the New SharePoint Site page shown in Figure 5-4. This is the page that actually creates the new site.

Description URL Name
Enter the folder name that will appear in the site s URL. SharePoint will provide the server name and the parent path. If you want a different parent path, return to the previous section and open the parent site you want. Select this option if you want the new site to admit all the same team members (and grant them all the same permission) as the parent site. Select this option if you want the new site to have different permissions from the parent site. Initially, you ll be the only team member, and you ll be an administrator.
