Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out
For information about creating and managing quota templates, refer to Managing Quotas and Locks in 15, Administering a SharePoint Server.
Selecting a Site Template
Initially, every new site displays the Template Selection page shown in Figure 5-8. This page customizes the new site s Web pages and capabilities.

Figure 5-8. This is the first page to appear for any new SharePoint site. Each template populates the site with a different set of the Web pages and features.
When this Web page appears, you have two choices:
Select the template you want and click the OK button. If you need help in selecting a
template, select each choice in turn and read the description that appears below the large graphic.
Close your browser, do any other work you need to do, and then get advice from your
co-workers or administrator. When you browse the new site again, the Template Selection page will reappear. Select the template you want and click OK. Tip
Until you select a template, Template Selection is the only page a new SharePoint site will display.

Creating SharePoint Sites and Pages
Applying a Theme
Once a site exists, anyone with the Apply Themes And Borders right can customize its appearance by applying a new theme. By default, members of the Administrator and Web Designer groups have this right. A SharePoint theme is a predesigned combination of colors, fonts, and background pictures. To choose a theme:

1 Display the site whose appearance you want to modify. 2 If the site is a meeting workspace, open the Modify This Workspace drop-down list and choose Site Settings. For any other type of site, click Site Settings in the navigation bar at the top of the page. 3 When the Site Settings Web page appears, under Customization, click Apply Theme To Site. 4 When the Apply Theme Web page shown in Figure 5-9 appears, use the list box to select the theme you want, and then click Apply.

Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out
Inside Out
Be cautious in choosing themes Many of the themes that come with Windows SharePoint Services have dark backgrounds that make pages hard to read, or hyperlink colors that provide poor contrast when the mouse is over the link. Be sure to check these aspects of any theme you select. For information about modifying themes or creating new ones, refer to Creating and Customizing Frontpage Themes in 8, Creating and Formatting Web Part Pages.

Navigating Among SharePoint Sites
Despite its capability to host Web sites by the thousands, Windows SharePoint Services offers surprisingly few features that help team members navigate among sites. Principally:
An Up To <parent site name> link appears in the top navigation bar of every site in a
collection, except for the top-level site itself. This links to the home page of the current site s parent.
If a top-level site is configured with the address of a portal site, an Up To <portal site
name> link appears in the top navigation bar of each page. The remaining topics in this section describe some more indirect ways of building links among SharePoint sites. In addition, you may wish to consider these choices, which are outside the Windows SharePoint Services browser interface.
Adding SharePoint sites to an area on a SharePoint Portal Server. The section titled
Managing Areas in 2 briefly explained this concept.
Using FrontPage 2003 to add links directly to the Web pages in the SharePoint site. For
more information on this approach, refer to 9, Creating and Modifying Basic Site Features.
Finding Links on the Sites And Workspaces Page
The Sites And Workspaces page shown previously in Figure 5-3 displays a list of subsites that are directly subordinate to the current site, and that the current team member has permission to access. However, this is two clicks away from the home page (Site Settings, Manage Sites And Workspaces), and neither of those clicks is intuitive for general browsing.
Finding Links on the View Site Hierarchy Page
The page shown in Figure 5-10 displays a clickable list of all the sites in the current collection. However, this page is available only to top-level site administrators.
Part III: Designing Sites and Pages with a Browser
Creating SharePoint Sites and Pages
Figure 5-10. Using this page, a top-level site administrator can view the contents of an entire site collection. In addition, the administrator can browse or manage any listed site.
