Using a Links Web Part requires only one click, not two or three or four like some of the other methods. However, it requires that you build the links manually, and remove them manually when they fall out of use. Also, this is an awkward way to manage hundreds of links, which the Web Part always lists in order of addition.

The Sites And Workspaces page shown in Figure 5-3 and the View Site Hierarchy page shown in Figure 5-10 prove that Windows SharePoint Services is well aware of the sites within a collection. Unfortunately, Microsoft provides no Web Part or other component that displays a convenient, clickable list of these sites. You can, however, create or purchase custom Web Parts that do this job. The Web Part shown in Figure 5-13, for example, displays links to:
All subsites of the current site. The current site s home page Any sites between current site and the current collection's top-level site. The top-level site and the portal site (if any) to which it connects. The server's home page and the portal site (if any) to which it connects.

Creating SharePoint Sites and Pages

Commercial Web Parts of this type are also available. One of these is the ADVIS Site Navigator Web Part, which is available from http://sharepoint.advis.ch You can search for additional components at Microsoft's SharePoint Products and Technologies Web Component Directory at http://www.microsoft.com/sharepoint/downloads/ components/.
Creating and Configuring Web Pages
Using nothing more than a browser, you can create and configure a surprising variety of Web pages that reside in a SharePoint site. This facility has its limitations, and it s certainly no replacement for programs like FrontPage 2003. Nevertheless, the combination of a browser and Windows SharePoint Services may be all you need for certain kinds of applications. The procedures for working with pages in meeting workspaces is different from the procedure for any other SharePoint site. For procedures that apply to meeting workspaces, refer to the last topic in this section.

The \WebParts\WssIso folder on the companion CD contains a Visual Studio .NET project that creates this Web Part and two others. The \WebParts\WssIso\debug\bin folder contains the compiled DLL. For more information about creating and installing such Web Parts, refer to Part VII of this book, "Developing Web Parts in Visual Studio.NET."

Creating Simple Web Pages
The simplest kind of page to create is an ordinary, flat page that contains no Web Parts or other special features. Here s the procedure.

Open the SharePoint site where the new Web page will reside. Make sure the site has a document library. If not, create one. Click the Create command in the top navigation bar of any page in the site. When the Create page appears, scroll down to the Web Pages section and click the Basic Page link. This will display the New Basic Page form shown in Figure 5-14.
Figure 5-14. By submitting this form, you can create a Web page designed for ordinary HTML content.
5 On the New Basic Page form, configure these settings. Name Type the filename base you want the Web page to have. Overwrite If File Already Exists Select this check box to overwrite an existing file with the same name, should such a file exist. Document Library Select a document library where the new page will reside. This must be an existing library in the same site. 6 Click Create to create the page and start the Microsoft Rich Text Editor as shown in Figure 5-15.
