Using only a browser, you can add, reconfigure, and remove Web Parts in many SharePoint pages. This includes, for example, the home page of a Team Site and any Web Part Pages you created yourself, as described in the previous section. Web Parts are independent units of content designed to occupy part of a Web page. Web Parts have code that executes on the Web server, much like the code in an ASP or ASP.NET page, but they don t usually display page banners, signature lines, and other aspects of a complete Web page design. The page that contains the Web Part usually provides these elements. To display a Web Part, you put it in a Web Part Page. Whenever the Web server delivers a Web Part Page, it runs any Web Parts the page contains, and merges the resulting HTML into the surrounding Web Part Page. A single Web Part Page can contain as many Web Parts as you want. Similarly, the same Web Part can appear in many different Web Part Pages. A Web Part Zone reserves space within a Web Part Page for one or more Web Parts.

Part III: Designing Sites and Pages with a Browser
Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out
If you re using FrontPage 2003 to design Web Part pages, you can add Web Parts
without using Web Parts Zones, but this sacrifices flexibility. Windows SharePoint Services can remember two different views of a Web Part Page:
Shared
This is the view that team members receive by default. To modify this view, a team member must hold the Add And Customize Pages right. By default, only the Administrator and Web Designer groups have this right. This is a view that each team member can customize. If a site has a hundred team members, Windows SharePoint Services could conceivably store a hundred different personal views, one for each member. To add, remove, or modify Web Parts in a personal view, team members need the Add/ Remove Private Web Parts right. For custom lists, team members need the Manage Personal Views right as well. By default, the Contributor, Web Designer, and Administrator groups have these rights, but not the Reader group.
Personal

To determine which Web pages you can modify in a browser, look for a Modify Shared Page or Modify My Page link in the top right corner. Clicking this link will display a menu with these choices:
Add Web Parts
Displays options to browse for, search for, or import Web Parts.
Browsing for a Web Part means selecting it from a list. Searching for a Web Part means typing part of its name and then clicking a Go button. Importing a Web Part means uploading a special XML document file from some other source (such as your hard disk). Web Part files have a filename extension of .dwp (deployable Web Part).
Design This Page
Shifts the page into an editable view where you can rearrange Web Parts by dragging. Displays a submenu with one choice for each Web Part on the page. Selecting any Web Part displays a task pane where you can modify the Web Part s appearance and layout. Displays the Web Part Page as configured for the SharePoint site as Displays the Web Part Page using your personal settings. a whole.
Modify My/Shared Web Parts
Shared View Personal View
Reset Page Content
This option appears only if you re in Personal view and have personalized content on the page. It resets all personal settings to the shared view.
The Design This Page command displays the page as shown in Figure 5-17. This is also the view in effect after you create a new Web Part Page as described in the previous section. The two gray rectangles labeled Left and Right show the boundaries of two Web Part zones named Left and Right. These are just names, and not positions. Whoever designed this page could just as easily have named these zones East and West, Dog and Cat, Hither and Yon, or anything else.
