Once the list exists, you can enter data, create new views, display views in Web pages, or even modify the list s data fields and features. Sections later in this chapter will explain these procedures.

Creating Custom Lists
For maximum flexibility when creating a new list, choose one of the links under the Custom Lists heading. Here s how these links work.
Custom List
This option displays the New List page shown in Figure 6-2, and then creates and displays a list with only one column: Title. In almost every case, you would use the instructions in the next section Modifying Lists to modify this starting point with additional fields and features.
Custom List In Datasheet View
Like the previous option, displays the New List page and creates a list with Title as the only column. This option, however, opens the new list in Datasheet View so you can view and modify list items in a tabular interface. For more information about using Datasheet View, refer to the section titled Working with Lists in Datasheet View later in this chapter.
Import Spreadsheet
Creates a list from data contained in a spreadsheet.

Designing Lists, Libraries, and Pages Here s the procedure for creating a new list from a spreadsheet.

Open the site that will contain the new list. Click the Create button on the top navigation bar of any page in the site. Scroll down to the Custom Lists section, and then choose Import Spreadsheet. When the New List page shown in Figure 6-4 appears, fill in these fields:
Name
Give the new list a name. Enter a few sentences describing the new list.

Description
File Location Type the full path and filename of the spreadsheet that contains the data you want in the list. Alternatively, click the Browse button and select the file you want.

5 Click Import. This will download a file to your computer that starts Excel and displays the prompt shown in Figure 6-5. 6 Specify the following options in the Import To Windows SharePoint Services List dialog box: Range Type Select the way you want to specify what cells to import. The choices are Range Of Cells, List Range (an Excel list), and Named Range (an Excel named range). Select Range Specify or select the range of cells you want.
