The Web pages that control a SharePoint Team Site are complex and contain many special elements that Windows SharePoint Services uses. You should therefore exercise extreme care when making changes to these pages. Change the appearance of the pages if you want, but not their underlying structure. The following sections will address some specific precautions.

Avoiding Older Versions of FrontPage
7
Microsoft created and tested FrontPage 2003 in unison with Windows SharePoint Services and SharePoint Portal Server. FrontPage 2003 is therefore safe for use with those products. If, however, you edit your SharePoint site with an earlier version of FrontPage (such as FrontPage 2002), the earlier version of FrontPage may actually break some features or remove some functionality from SharePoint pages. This occurs because some features of SharePoint Web sites, such as Web Parts and data views, didn t exist when Microsoft developed and tested those earlier versions of FrontPage.
Be particularly careful of page areas that Windows SharePoint Services updates from time to time. One such area, for example, is the Quick Launch bar that appears on the home page of many sites. The Quick Launch bar isn t a Web Part; it s just an HTML table cell marked with 215

Additional precautions apply when you use FrontPage 2003 to modify sites and pages unique to SharePoint Portal Server. For more information, browse Microsoft Knowledge Base article 831612: Considerations that apply when you use FrontPage 2003 to edit SharePoint Portal Server 2003 sites. You can edit the Quick Launch bar by hand, but Windows SharePoint Services is likely to overwrite your change or not work properly the next time someone clicks Yes to Display This List On The Quick Launch Bar on the Settings page for some list or library. This makes it best not to edit an area like the Quick launch Bar at all. If you want to add links or other content to a page, do so in an unused area.

Avoiding ASP and ASP.NET Pages
A Web server running Windows SharePoint Services won t run ASP pages, ordinary ASP.NET pages, or other common server-side programs. There are four primary reasons for this:
A server running Window SharePoint Services doesn t provide a normal operating
environment for ASP and ASP.NET pages. Instead of using normal Windows, IIS, and .NET Framework program interface for certain operations, a page running on a SharePoint server needs to read and manipulate a special SharePoint object model.
Microsoft presumes that if you want to run Windows SharePoint Services, you want to
develop Web Parts and deploy them in Web Part Pages.
SharePoint servers are heavily locked down from a security point of view. To develop
and deploy a Web Part, for example, you must use a special Visual Studio .NET template, digitally sign your code, and then register the signed module on the SharePoint server.
A so-called Safe Mode parser examines all ASP and ASP.NET pages and prevents any
server-side code they contain from executing. If, in fact, you want to run ordinary ASP or ASP.NET pages, you should pursue one of these alternatives:
Run the pages on an ordinary (non-SharePoint) Web server, possibly with the
FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions installed. This could be a different virtual server on the same computer that runs your SharePoint site.
Create an unmanaged (i.e. excluded) path within your SharePoint server, and then
install the conventional ASP.NET application within that path.
For more information about unmanaged (i.e. excluded) paths, refer to, Planning Managed Paths, in 5.
Avoiding FrontPage Database Features
The following FrontPage database components don t work under Windows SharePoint Services. Save Results To Database Database Results Wizard Saves form results into a database table. Displays information from a database in various formats.
Part 1: Part Title
Opening, Creating, and Copying SharePoint Sites Database Interface Wizard Uses the preceding components to construct a general-purpose set of Web pages for viewing, adding, changing, and deleting database records. In most cases, the loss of these components isn t as tragic as you might think. You just need to use SharePoint lists, views, and Web Parts instead. Here are some helpful references.
