1. In Solution Explorer, right-click AdventureWorks .cube and select View Designer . 2. Click the Partitions tab . All of the data in a cube is stored in partitions . Every measure group must have at least one partition but could have many . You will learn more about partitions in 14, Managing Partitions and Database Processing . For now, the important thing to note is that when you write-enable a measure group, a new partition that contains the writeback values is created . 3. Expand the Product Forecast measure group and right-click the Fact Product Forecast partition . 4. Select Writeback Settings . The Enable Writeback dialog box appears . In this dialog box, you can specify the name of the table that will contain the writeback values . This table will be created the next time the measure group is processed . You select the database that will contain the writeback table by selecting a data source . Remember that in 3, Accessing Source Data, you learned that a data source contains the information that Analysis Services uses to connect to a database . The writeback table does not have to be in the same database that contains the measure group s fact table . You can also select the writeback partition storage mode . In MOLAP storage mode, after writeback values are written to the writeback table, they are processed into the Analysis Services . In ROLAP mode, the writeback values are stored only in the relational database . 5. Accept all of the default values in the Enable Writeback dialog box .

7. Before you can write back data to the Product Forecast measure group, you must deploy your changes to Analysis Services . On the Build menu, select Deploy AdventureWorks SSAS . After the project has been deployed successfully, you are ready to begin the next procedure, in which you will write back data to the Product Forecast measure group . You will first update values the values in the cube by using the UPDATE CUBE MDX statement . These new values will be temporarily stored in the writeback cache . You will then commit these changes to the cube, so that Analysis Services will write records to the writeback table in the relational database and process these records into the writeback partition . Analysis Services can only write values to the lowest level of a cube . To change the value of an aggregation, Analysis Services must allocate the change to the lowest level of the cube . By default, Analysis Services will allocate the updated value evenly across the lower levels . In this procedure, you will see how Analysis Services allocates values across the lower levels of the cube . Not all client applications are able to take advantage the writeback functionality of Analysis Services . For example, neither the cube browser in BIDS nor Microsoft Office Excel 2007 are able to perform writeback . If your client application cannot perform writeback, you may need to add a custom-coded extension to the application . A client application uses the UPDATE CUBE MDX statement to write back values to a cube . Some client applications make it appear that they are writing data back to an aggregate value . In reality, they are using an UPDATE CUBE statement to allocate the aggregate value across leaf-level values .
