This role, referred to as the server role, is the only server-level role permitted within Analysis Services, and it cannot be dropped or modified beyond changes to its membership . The server role has full administrative rights within Analysis Services, permitting members of the role to create, alter, or drop any object hosted by the server and to access any data associated with these objects . Members of the server role may also alter server-level configuration settings and start traces as described in 16, Advanced Monitoring and Management Tools . These rights are highly permissive, so membership in the server role should be limited to those persons with ultimate responsibility for the integrity of the Analysis Services service . In the following exercise, you will use SQL Server Management Studio to assign membership within the server role .

1. Start SQL Server Management Studio and connect to Analysis Services . 2. From Object Explorer, right-click the Analysis Services server and select Properties from the shortcut menu to open the Analysis Services Properties dialog box, which is divided into three pages: General, Language/Collation, and Security . From the Security page, click the Add button to open the Select Users Or Groups dialog box . 5. In this dialog box, click the Object Types button and select Groups in the resulting dialog box .
