Click the Create button to create the SsasUsers group and then click the Close button to return to the Computer Management console . A local Windows group named SsasUsers is now in place on your computer . You will assign this group membership to various Analysis Services roles in exercises throughout this chapter . Individual Windows users assigned membership within the SsasUsers group, of which there are currently none, would obtain access to Analysis Services through roles associated with this group . You can now close the Computer Management console, though you will want to return to it after you complete this chapter to remove the SsasUsers group from your computer .

Within Analysis Services, administrative rights are assigned at two levels . The broadest administrative rights are granted through the built-in server role . More limited rights are assigned through custom database roles . In the sections that follow, you will explore the use of these roles to assign appropriate administrative access within Analysis Services .

Analysis Services comes preconfigured with a single, server-level role . This role, referred to as the server role, is the only server-level role permitted within Analysis Services, and it cannot be dropped or modified beyond changes to its membership . The server role has full administrative rights within Analysis Services, permitting members of the role to create, alter, or drop any object hosted by the server and to access any data associated with these objects . Members of the server role may also alter server-level configuration settings and start traces as described in 16, Advanced Monitoring and Management Tools . These rights are highly permissive, so membership in the server role should be limited to those persons with ultimate responsibility for the integrity of the Analysis Services service . In the following exercise, you will use SQL Server Management Studio to assign membership within the server role .

Assign membership to the server role
1. Start SQL Server Management Studio and connect to Analysis Services . 2. From Object Explorer, right-click the Analysis Services server and select Properties from the shortcut menu to open the Analysis Services Properties dialog box, which is divided into three pages: General, Language/Collation, and Security . Each of these pages is accessible through a list on the left side of the dialog box . For the purposes of this exercise, you will use the Security page . This is the page through which Windows users and groups are added to the server role . 3. Navigate to the Security page by selecting the Security item in the list on the left side of the Analysis Services Properties dialog box . The Security page is very straightforward . In the center of the page is a list of those Windows identities currently assigned membership to the server role . Below and to the right of this list are two buttons for adding and removing members . That s all there is to the page . Before moving forward with the exercise, take a minute to review the members of the server role as presented on the Security page . If Analysis Services has been left to its default settings, as has ours, you will likely see no members listed here . This implies there are no members of the server role, but obviously, you have server-level administrative rights . Your hidden membership in this role is explained in the sidebar titled Built-In Administrator Access later in this chapter . 4. From the Security page, click the Add button to open the Select Users Or Groups dialog box . 5. In this dialog box, click the Object Types button and select Groups in the resulting dialog box . Leave the other check boxes selected and click OK to return to the Select Users Or Groups dialog box .
