Through database roles, access to data is tailored to the needs of your users . Because all Analysis Services data is accessed through cubes, your first step is to grant access to one or more cubes . After you grant this permission, you can then limit the data accessible through these cubes using dimension data and cell-level restrictions .

Database roles are not permitted access to the data in cubes unless specifically granted (or overridden by full control rights as previously described) . By granting a role Read access to a cube, you enable the members of the role to access all dimension and measures within the cube except where restricted by dimension data and cell-level constraints assigned to the role . Through Read/Write access, the same level of Read access is permitted, and write-back features accessible through the cube are generally enabled where specifically permitted through dimension, partition, and cell-level settings .

1. In Solution Explorer, right-click the Roles folder and select New Role from the shortcut menu . A new role, Role 1 .role, is added to the Roles folder and the Role Designer for this object is presented . 2. Using Solution Explorer, rename the role from Role 1 .role to North American Analysts.role . As before, click Yes at the prompt . 3. On the General tab of the Role Designer, enter a short description identifying this role as intended for those responsible for the analysis of data related to countries in North America . In the next exercise, you will implement dimension data restrictions limiting the members of this role to data related to countries in North America . In this exercise, you simply need to enable access to the AdventureWorks cube . This is done through the Cubes tab . 4. Navigate to the Cubes tab and review the list of cubes available through the database . Notice each cube is assigned a default access right of None . The None access right assignment indicates the North American Analysts role is not currently granted access to the data in these cubes . 5. A drop-down list to the right of the AdventureWorks cube allows you to grant this role Read access to its data . Use the drop-down list to change the access level from None to Read .

The role is now configured to provide Read access to the AdventureWorks cube . This is your first step in defining a role tailored to the needs of your users, the North American analysts . Before going any further, you should save your changes to the role . 6. Save the changes to this role by selecting Save All from the File menu . Note In later steps, you will assign membership to the role . As a general best practice, it

Part III Advanced Design
The Local Cube/Drillthrough Access Right
In the previous exercise, you may have noticed that some additional rights were assigned to cubes through the Role Designer s Cube tab . These include processing rights, discussed earlier in this chapter, and local cube/drillthrough access rights . The assignment of local cube/drillthrough access rights determines whether members of a role are granted the rights required to execute two relatively advanced MDX statements, DRILLTHROUGH and CREATE GLOBAL CUBE . The DRILLTHROUGH statement allows the underlying rows of a cell to be retrieved . The CREATE GLOBAL CUBE statement allows cube data to be extracted to a local cube file for offline analysis . Both statements support powerful forms of analysis, but each one accesses raw data in a way that bypasses certain calculations that typically take place in a cube . The CREATE GLOBAL CUBE statement entails the additional risk of extracting large volumes of data to a highly transportable structure . For this reason, local cube/drillthrough access is assigned a default value of None and should be left in this state unless clearly defined and understood requirements dictate otherwise .
