8. Click Next . On the Set Aggregation Options page, verify that Performance Gain Reaches is selected and the percentage amount is 100 . When creating aggregations using the Usage-Based Optimization Wizard, you set this value to 100 so that the wizard will create aggregations for all the queries you have selected in the query log . 13 Designing Aggregations
The number of aggregations the wizard created for you may differ from the number shown here, because your query log may contain different records based on how you browsed the cube . 9. Click Next . When you run the Usage-Based Optimization Wizard, the Completing The Wizard page will allow you to create a new aggregation design, or you can merge the aggregations the wizard has designed with an existing aggregation . If you have run the wizard with a representative sample of queries, then you will want to create a new aggregation design . If you selected a subset of queries from the query log, for example, you may have selected slow-running queries or queries executed by a subset of users, so you will want to merge the aggregations designed by the wizard with an existing aggregation . 10. On the Completing The Wizard page, verify that Create A New Aggregation Design is selected, change the name to AggregationDesign 3, and click Finish . The Aggregations tab of the Cube Designer now displays the new aggregation design and indicates that the Fact Reseller Sales partition will use AggregationDesign 3 . AggregationDesign 1 and AggregationDesign 2 display Design Warnings, because they are not being used by any partitions . Delete these aggregation designs . 11. Right-click AggregationDesign 1 and select Delete . In the Delete Objects dialog box, click OK . Repeat this step for AggregationDesign 2 . 12. Select Save All from the File menu and then close BIDS . Close SQL Server Management Studio . In this chapter, you learned that aggregations enable Analysis Services to provide fast query response by precalculating summary values and storing the values on disk . You learned how to design aggregations using the Aggregation Design Wizard . The Aggregation Design Wizard assumes that all queries are equally likely, and then it designs aggregations by selecting from a pool of attributes that are eligible to be included, using the count of fact records and attribute members . You learned how to create attribute relationships that identify the natural hierarchies in a dimension and how to create user-defined hierarchies to indicate important drilldown paths . The Aggregation Design Wizard can use this information to create an improved aggregation design . You also learned how to design aggregations using the Usage-Based Optimization Wizard . The Usage-Based Optimization Wizard is similar to the Aggregation Design Wizard except that instead of considering all queries equally likely, it designs aggregations to optimize the performance of queries that have been recorded in a log .
