In this chapter, you use the Report Project Wizard and the Report Wizard to help you start and build a new report. (In 4, you'll learn another way to begin a report.) These wizards, which are provided within the Report Designer, are handy tools that walk you through each of the steps described in the preceding section. As part of the report preparation, you create a data source to locate the database for Reporting Services, and then define the query that is used to populate the report with data.

When you start a new report using the Report Project Wizard, you are creating Microsoft Visual Studio containers to hold your report, a project, and a solution. You must name these containers and provide a storage location for them on your computer s hard drive or on a network file share. In this procedure, you create a new report project called Adventure Works and specify a storage location for the project.

Note If this is your first time working with Visual Studio, you might not be familiar with the way that items are organized in this environment. A report is placed inside a project, which you can think of as a folder that organizes many reports into a collection. Because you re using the Report Project Wizard, you can work with only one project right now. However, you ll be adding reports to this project as you progress through this book. When you publish all reports in a project, they are automatically organized into the same folder on the Report Server.

Note In the same way that a project is a container for a report, a solution is a container for one or more projects. Visual Studio lets you work with only one solution at a time, but you have free access to any project within the open solution.
Building Your First Report
If the Business Intelligence Projects folder isn t open, click this folder to display the available templates. Click the Report Project Wizard. If necessary, click the More button at the bottom of the dialog box. You can skip this step if the Less button is displayed at the bottom of the dialog box. Type a name for the project: Adventure Works. Notice that as you type, the text in the New Solution Name box of the New Project dialog box changes to match the project name. You have the option to change the solution name later if you change your mind.

Click OK to continue. The Welcome page of the Report Wizard is displayed. Note that this wizard is different from the Report Project Wizard. The Report Project Wizard lets you create a solution, a project, and a report in one step, and then launches the Report Wizard. You can use the Report Wizard any time you want to add a report to an existing project using a wizard interface. (This is explained in 4.) If you want to bypass this page of the Report Wizard in the future, you can select the check box here to disable the Welcome page. Click Next.

Connecting to a Data Source
The next step of the Report Wizard allows you to specify connection information. Here you identify the server and database hosting the data. If necessary, you can also supply credentials information to be used by Reporting Services for authentication when querying the database. In this procedure, you create a data source that defines a connection to the rs2000sbsDW database in your SQL Server using Microsoft Windows authentication.
