Tony Northrup If you re wondering how all these smart card improvements in Windows Vista will help you, you re probably not alone. As an administrator, you still can t just buy a stack of smart cards and start using them. You ll need to work with a third-party smart card provider, just like you would for earlier versions of Windows. It s the developers at the thirdparty smart card provider that will really appreciate the improvements because it ll make their jobs easier and make their smart card software much more elegant. Even though it s developers who benefit the most from these improvements, they re still important for you to understand.

Credential Manager is a single-sign on feature, originally for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP, that enables users to input user names and passwords for multiple network resources and applications. When different resources require authentication, Windows can then automatically provide the credentials without requiring the user to type them. In Windows Vista, Credential Manager can roam stored user names and passwords between multiple Windows Vista computers in an Active Directory domain. Windows Vista stores credentials in the user s Active Directory user object. This enables users to store credentials once and use them from any logon session within the Active Directory domain. For example, if you connect to a password-protected web server and you select the Remember My Password check box, Microsoft Internet Explorer will be able to retrieve your saved password later, even if you log on to a different computer. Although earlier versions of Windows will not be able to access the stored credentials, it won t cause any problems if a user does log on to Windows XP. Users can take advantage of Credential Manager without even being aware of it. For example, each time a user connects to a shared folder or printer and selects the Reconnect At Logon check box, Windows Vista automatically stores that user s credentials within Credential Manager. Similarly, if a user authenticates to a website that requires authentication and selects the Remember My Password check box in the Internet Explorer authentication dialog box, Internet Explorer stores the user name and password in Credential Manager.

Windows Vista automatically adds credentials used to connect to shared folders to the Credential Manager. However, you might want to manually add a user name and password so that Windows Vista can automatically provide those credentials for a group of computers in a different domain. To manually add a user name and password to Credential Manager, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 2. Click the User Accounts link. Then, click the User Accounts link again. 3. In the left pane, click the Manage Your Network Passwords link. The Stored User Names And Passwords dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 7-1. You can also open this tool by running the case-sensitive command rundll32.exe keymgr.dll,KRShowKeyMgr.

4. Click Add. The Stored Credential Properties dialog box appears. 5. In the Log On To box, type the name used to identify the network resource. You can use an asterisk (*) as a wildcard. For example, to use the credential for all resources in the contoso.com domain, you could type *.contoso.com. 6. In the User Name and Password boxes, type your user credentials. 7. In the Credential Type group, select A Windows Logon Credential if you are connecting to a shared folder, printer, or other Windows network resource. If you are connecting to a website, select A Web Site Or Program Credential. Figure 7-2 demonstrates how to complete the Stored Credential Properties dialog box.
