The WLAN AutoConf ig service must be started for wireless networks to be available. This service by default is set to start automatically.
2. The Connect To A Network Wizard appears. Select the wireless network you want to connect to, and then click Connect.

Appearance of networks that don t broadcast an SSID
In Windows Vista, networks that are conf igured to not broadcast an SSID will appear as Unnamed Network, allowing you to connect to the network.
3. If the network does not broadcast an SSID, you will see the Type The Network Name (SSID) For The Network page. Type the network name, and then click Next. 4. If the network is not encrypted, click Connect Anyway.

5. If the network is encrypted, you will see the Type The Network Security Key Or Passphrase page. Type the security key. Alternatively, if you have saved network settings to a universal serial bus (USB) flash drive, you can connect it now. Click Connect. 6. Windows Vista will connect to the network, and then display the Successfully Connected To SSID page. Click Close. Now you ll be able to use the wireless network. If you want to disconnect from the wireless network, you can follow these steps to connect to a different wireless network or simply click Start, and then Connect To, select your current wireless network connection, and then click Disconnect.
Manually Creating a New Wireless Network Profile
The easiest way to connect to a wireless network is to click Start, click Connect To, and follow the prompts that appear. However, that only works if the wireless network is currently in range and broadcasting an SSID. If you want to preconfigure a wireless network so that Windows Vista can automatically connect to it later when the network is in range, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, and then click Connect To. The Connect To A Network Wizard appears. 2. On the Disconnect Or Connect To Another Network page, near the bottom-right corner, click the Set Up A Connection Or Network link. 3. On the Choose A Connection Option page, click Manually Connect To A Wireless Network, as shown in Figure 11-1. Click Next.

4. On the Enter Information For The Wireless Network You Want To Add page, type the Network Name (which is the wireless network s SSID), choose the security settings, and choose whether to save the network connection. If the wireless network does not broadcast an SSID, select the Connect Even If The Network Is Not Broadcasting check box, as shown in Figure 11-2. Click Next.

5. If a User Account Control (UAC) prompt appears, respond to it. 6. Click Close. As described in Lesson 1, Configuring Wireless Networking, you can also preconfigure wireless networks using Group Policy settings or scripts.
