The Windows PE tools are command-line utilities, so to use them you will need to open a command prompt and navigate to the Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools directory. (Alternatively, you can simply open the Windows PE Tools Command Prompt that is available on the Start menu.) 1. To begin the process, first use the script named Copype.cmd to install the Windows PE files into a new directory of your choice. When you run the Copype.cmd script, you need to include an argument of x86, amd64, or ia64 to specify the CPU architecture of the computer on which the Windows PE CD will be used. For example, to install the Windows PE files in a new C:\WinPE_x86 in preparation for an x86 CPU, type the following:

After you run this command, the new WinPE_x86 directory will contain, among other files and folders, a directory named ISO. This ISO directory is important because it contains the eventual contents of the WinPE CD. 2. For this reason, the next step in creating a Windows PE CD is to copy Imagex.exe (and any other tools you need on the eventual CD) to this ISO folder in the new directory. You can find three versions of the Imagex.exe tool, one for each of the supported CPU architectures (amd64, ia64, or x86). Each version is located in the Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\ folder and in the subfolder named for the associated architecture (amd64, ia64, or x86). After you find the version of ImageX that corresponds to the CPU architecture of the master computer, copy the tool to the root of the ISO directory, to a new subfolder such as Tools, or to another location of your choice. For example, if you want Imagex.exe to appear in the root of the Windows PE CD, run the following command:

3. For ImageX, you should then create the Wimscript.ini configuration file in Notepad and place this file in the same directory (in our example, the root of the ISO folder) as Imagex.exe. The Wimscript.ini file includes two sections, the [ExclusionList] section and the [CompressionExclusionList] section. The [ExclusionList] section specifies which files should not be captured when you are performing a capture by using the ImageX tool. A typical exclusion list might resemble the following:

The [CompressExclusionList] section of Wimscript.ini specifies which files or file types should not be compressed when you are compressing an image by using the ImageX tool. A typical compress exclusion list might look like the following:

After you have created the Wimscript.ini file, you are ready to make an .iso file of the ISO directory by using the Oscdimg command-line tool, which is available in the Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\ directory. To make the Windows PE CD bootable, use the b switch to specify the location of the boot sector file, etfsboot.com. Etfsboot.com is found in the root of the directory (such as WinPE_x86) created by the Copype.cmd script. For example, to create a bootable image file named winpe_x86.iso out of the contents of the C:\WinPE_x86\ISO folder (and to place this new .iso file in the C:\WinPE_x86 folder), navigate a command prompt to the PETools directory, and then type the following:

The n switch in Oscdimg enables long f ile names in the .iso f ile. Note also that there is no space after the b switch.
5. After you have created the .iso file, you can burn this file to a CD by using your favorite CD-burning software.
