Notice that only Mountain Bikes, Road Bikes, and Touring Bikes are visible. Because of the relationship between Category and Subcategory, the security which limited Category members to Bikes also affected the Subcategory members. Also notice that the Grand Total still includes all product sales and is not affected by dimension security, making the report appear to be inaccurate.

In addition to excluding specific members from dimensions, you can also filter the aggregate values for a dimension so that the Grand Total only displays the aggregate for the visible members. By controlling visual totals for a dimension, the difference between the values displayed and the actual Grand Total for the dimension cannot be deduced. In this procedure, you ll enable visual totals for the Subcategory attribute hierarchy. Enable visual totals 1. Open the role designer for All Users, click the Dimension Data tab, select Subcategory in the Attribute Hierarchy drop-down list, and then click the Advanced tab. 2. At the bottom of the screen, select the Enable Visual Total check box. Default settings for the cube s access return all values directly from the cube. The Grand Total for Subcategory is an aggregated value from the cube, not a calculation based on visible members in the browser. By changing the setting for this attribute hierarchy to Enable Visual Total, the cube will now display the total of the visible members instead of returning the aggregated value for the hierarchy.

The Grand Total now appears as the sum of Mountain Bikes, Road Bikes, and Touring Bikes. It s as if the other Subcategories don t exist, and no one at least no one who is viewing the cube as a member of the All Users role has access to the information necessary to figure out all product sales.

The default member is used for any filter attribute hierarchy that does not have an explicit value selected. By default, the default member for an attribute hierarchy is the member of the All level. You can manually set the default member of an attribute hierarchy by specifying a member as the value for its DefaultMember property. But what if you need a different default member for different groups of users For example, suppose that for the Time.Calendar dimension, most users want to see the most recent year, but budget analysts want to see the most recent month. By defining the default member in a role, you can give each group the appropriate default member. Note Adding a default member to a role is independent of using an expression to calculate the default member. You can add a constant default member to a role, and you can put a calculated default member directly in the dimension. The only reason for putting a default member into a role is if you want different default members (constants or expressions) for different groups of users.

In this procedure, you ll assign a default member to the Time.Calendar hierarchy for the All Users role. Create a default dimension member for a role 1. Switch to the Role Designer for All Users. 2. In the Dimension drop-down list on the Dimension Data tab, select Time (under SSAS), and then click OK. 3. In the Attribute Hierarchy drop-down list, select Calendar Year. 4. In the Default Member box on the Advanced tab, click the Edit MDX button. Alternatively, you can type a multidimensional expression (MDX) directly in the Default Member box. The MDX Builder, however, allows you to use drag-and-drop with functions and cube metadata to aid the construction of an expression. 5. Expand the Set folder in the Functions pane, scroll down to locate the TAIL function, and then drag TAIL into the Expression box. The syntax for the Tail function is TAIL( Set [, Count ] ). The Tail function returns a specified number of members at the end of a set. Since you want the default member to be the most recent year in the Time dimension, you will create a set of members from the Calendar Year attribute hierarchy of the Time dimension and use the Tail function to retrieve the most recent, or last, member in that set. 6. In the Expression box, highlight Set , and then drag Calendar Year from the Metadata pane and drop on Set . 7. Highlight [, Count ], and then type .Members, 1. After the closing parenthesis of the Tail function, type .Item(0). The MDX Builder dialog box looks like this:
