The Members function retrieves a set of all the members of the Calendar Year level. The Item function then extracts the first (and only!) member of that set. The result of the expression is thus the last member of the Calendar Year attribute hierarchy. 8. Click OK, and then deploy the project to apply the change to the attribute hierarchy, and then click Reconnect on the Browser tab of the Cube Designer. 9. Click anywhere in the grid, click the Clear Results button on the Browser toolbar, and then drag the Amount measure from the Finance folder into the Totals area. Your screen looks like this:

The amount, $1,734,978, represents the amount for the Calendar Year 2004, which is the last year in the set of members in the Calendar Year attribute hierarchy. Since this attribute hierarchy is not on a row or column axis and is not used as a filter, the default member is automatically applied. 10. Drag the Time.CalendarYear attribute hierarchy onto rows.

Dimension-level security prevents the user from seeing certain members. Such security does not directly prevent viewing of cell values, but, clearly, if a member does not appear, the values for that member will not be visible either. In short, in most situations, dimension-level security is all you ll ever need. In some situations, however, you might want reports to display all the members but block the values for some of the cells. When you need to secure specific cells without removing members, you need to apply cell-level security to a cube.

The Finance measure group contains, among other things, expense information. It includes information related to payroll, such as Salaries and Employee Benefits. Salary information is typically very sensitive within a company. You might want to change a cube so that financial reviewers can see the higher level financial information, but not the detailed financial information. You can use cell-level security to do this. In this procedure, you ll secure detailed Labor data in the SSAS cube.

Add an MDX expression to enable read permissions for specific cube cells 1. In the Browser, replace the Time.Calendar attribute hierarchy on rows with the Accounts hierarchy, and then expand the following members in the grid: Net Income, Operating Profit, Operating Expenses, and Labor Expenses. You might need to resize windows in Visual Studio to see the full grid as it expands horizontally. Your screen looks like this:
With no security applied to this dimension or to particular cell values, you can view the dollar amounts for Employee Benefits, Payroll Taxes, and Salaries. 2. In Solution Explorer, double-click Financial Reviewers.role to open the Role Designer. 3. Click the Membership tab, click Add, click Advanced, click Object Types, select the Groups check box, click OK, click Find Now, select _FinancialReviewers, and then click OK twice. 4. Click the Cubes tab, and then select Read in the Access drop-down list for the SSAS cube. 5. Click the Cell Data tab, select SSAS in the Cube drop-down list if necessary, and then select the Enable Read Permissions check box. 6. Type the following MDX expression in the Allow Reading of Cube Content box: [Account].[Accounts].Parent.Name<>"Labor Expenses".

Implementing Security
Your screen looks like this:
For cell-level security, you need an MDX expression that can be calculated for each cell of a grid. For each cell, before the value is displayed, the expression is evaluated. If, in the context of that one cell, the expression returns the value 1 (True), the value is displayed. If the expression returns 0 (False), the value is not displayed. 7. Deploy the project to apply the change, switch to the cube Browser, and then click Reconnect. 8. Click the Change Users button on the toolbar, select Financial Reviewers in the Roles drop-down list, clear the All Users check box, and then click OK twice. 9. Drag the Accounts hierarchy to rows, and then expand Measures, Finance and drag Amount to the totals area, and then expand the following members in the grid: Net Income, Operating Profit, Operating Expenses, and Labor Expenses.
