Cell-level security is particularly important in write-enabled cubes because you might want different groups of people to be able to modify different cell values. The Units Forecast partition in the SSAS cube has been write-enabled if you successfully completed 10. As a default, a role gives unrestricted read permission but no write permission, even if a partition in the cube is write-enabled. To allow the members of a role to write to a cube, the cube must be write-enabled and then the role must be given read/write permission. In this procedure, you ll grant permissions to the Financial Analysts role to use writeback with the SSAS cube. Enable user writeback 1. Open the Role Designer for the Financial Analysts role. 2. Click the Membership tab, click Add, click Advanced, click Object Types, select the Groups check box, click OK, click Find Now, click _FinancialAnalysts, and then click OK twice. 3. Click the Cubes tab, and then select Read/Write in the Access drop-down list of the SSAS cube.

Members of the local Administrators group are automatically members of the Analysis Services server role, and consequently have permissions to perform any task and view any data in all databases deployed on the server. You must be a member of this role in order to grant other users administrative, read, or read/write permissions. When granting administrative permissions to users who are not members of the local Administrators group, you must first decide whether to provide permissions at the server level or at the database level. When granted permissions at the server level, a user can change server properties, create a database, create database roles, and run traces on the Analysis Server. To add a user or group to the server role, you can access the Security page of the Properties dialog box for the Analysis Services instance in SQL Server Management Studio. If you want to grant administrative permissions at the database level, then you can either create a database role in SQL Server Management Studio or add a role to the project in Visual Studio and deploy the project.

Creating Security Roles for Processing
At the server level, an Analysis Services administrator has full access to every database, but you can create database roles to limit the administrative rights for an individual or a group. When you decide to limit administrative permissions by using a database role, you can also choose to limit permissions to specific cubes or dimensions. You can even prevent administrators of a database from viewing the data in that database. In this procedure, you ll create a database role to grant permissions to process the SSAS cube. Create a database role with cube processing permissions 1. Start SQL Server Management Studio, connect to Analysis Services, expand the Databases folder, expand the SSAS Step by Step database, right-click the Roles folder, and then click New Role. Note To complete the remaining procedures in this chapter, you must have successfully completed the procedures in each of the preceding chapters. If you skipped the previous chapters, you can use Visual Studio to open the SSAS Step by Step solution in the C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\Microsoft Press\as2005sbs \Answers\chap10\SSAS Step by Step folder and then deploy the project to the Analysis Server to create and process the database.
