The key difference between low-latency MOLAP and medium-latency MOLAP is that, with low-latency, the default Latency setting is 30 minutes. To test latency, you will reduce this value to two minutes which is likely to be too frequent for a production database but makes a shorter interval for you to test. You will also change the Silence Interval setting to a longer interval to make sure that any change to the data source doesn t trigger processing an update of the cache. 7. Change the Silence Interval to 10 minutes, change the Latency setting to 2 minutes. You ll observe proactive caching in action later in this chapter by using SQL Server Profiler to monitor how Analysis Services responds to queries after the fact table is updated. 8. Click the Notifications tab. You use the notification options to specify the conditions which indicate that data has changed in the warehouse. The default value is SQL Server. Any dimension and fact tables used for the current partition are monitored for changes, but you can also specifically identify tables to be monitored. Alternatively, you can choose to have a client application send notification of changes by using the Client Initiated option, or you can choose to poll specific tables by using the Scheduled Polling option. Scheduled Polling is useful if your warehouse is stored in a relational database that is not in SQL Server. For more information about polling queries, refer to SQL Server Books Online. 9. Click OK twice to close all dialog boxes.

Generally, you ll find few performance problems with small databases. As you work with large databases, you can address many potential performance problems by applying one or more strategies designed specifically for coping with large cubes. Partitioning a cube is only a first step. Through trial and error, you will have to determine the appropriate storage mode, aggregation design, and processing options. SQL Server Profiler and the Performance Monitor are useful tools you can use to see what s happening behind the scenes on the Analysis server.

SQL Server Profiler can capture events from Analysis Services to help you monitor and troubleshoot performance. Not only can you spot operations that are running slowly, but you can also view the actual MDX and Structured Query Language (SQL) statements that are executed and you can save events for playback later. In order to use SQL Server Profiler, you must be a member of the Analysis Server server role. (For more information about assigning a user or group to the Analysis Server server role, see 11.) By default, local administrators are members of this role. In this procedure, you ll update the relational source for the MOLAP cube, and then monitor the impact of proactive caching on the execution of queries to the cube. Use SQL Server Profiler to monitor queries 1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Performance Tools, and then click SQL Server Profiler. 2. On the File menu, click New Trace. 3. In the Server Type drop-down list, click Analysis Services, and then click Connect. 4. Type Analysis Services Trace in the Trace Name box, and then click Run.

Your screen looks like this:
5. In SQL Server Management Studio, click the Open File button on the toolbar, navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\Microsoft Press \as2005sbs\chap12 folder, double-click the Test Latency.sql file, and then click Connect. This SQL script adds one more to the FactResellerSales table to record a sale in Mexico. 6. Click the Execute button on the toolbar. Now you re ready to see what happens when you incrementally update the Sales Territory dimension. 7. In SQL Server Management Studio, browse the MOLAP cube in the Working with Storage database by placing Sales Territory on rows and Measures in the totals area. The total for Order Quantity is still 214,381 which does not include the newly added fact table. 8. Switch to SQL Server Profiler, and then click the Pause Selected Trace button. Maximize the trace window, scroll to find the first Query Begin event class and 0 MDXQuery event subclass, and then click that row.
