You can browse a cube using the same interface you use in Visual Studio when developing and testing a cube. 13. Spend a few minutes browsing the Sales cube. For example, you might drag over some dimensions into the grid, drill to browse members on different levels, and perform various queries to add entries to the query log. Be sure to drill down within your dimensions. Each manipulation of the browser layout generates a new query to the server. 14. Close the browser window.

You don t need to review the usage data in the query log before you apply usage-based optimization. The data in this table won t be particularly useful to you, but it s good to confirm that you have usage data available before running the Usage-Based Optimization Wizard. In the next procedure, you ll review data in the query log. Browse the query log 1. With the dbo.OlapQueryLog window open in SQL Server Management Studio, click the Execute SQL button in the toolbar to refresh the contents of the window. Your screen looks similar to this:

Each time you added a dimension or a measure to the grid, moved items off the grid, or drilled up or down within a hierarchy, a new record was inserted into the OlapQueryLog. Review the record count at the bottom of the screen to see how quickly your queries added data into the log. 2. Close the table window, but keep SQL Server Management Studio open.

Once you ve accumulated a set of queries in the usage log, you can use the Usage-Based Optimization Wizard to design aggregations. The Usage-Based Optimization Wizard is essentially the Usage Analysis Wizard attached to the front of the Aggregation Design Wizard. First, you select the logged queries that should apply, and then you design aggregations. In this procedure, you ll use the Usage-Based Optimization Wizard to analyze the logged queries and design aggregations optimized for these queries. Design usage-based aggregations 1. In Visual Studio, open the Cube Designer for the SSAS 7 cube, click the Partition tab, right-click the first row in the table for the Resellers Sales partition, click UsageBased Optimization, and then click Next. On the Specify Query Criteria page, there are several different filters that you can use to customize the optimization process: Beginning Date, Ending Date, Users, and Most Frequent Queries. Since this query log has only been tracking data on one day, for one user, and only for a very short period, changing the filter criteria won t make much difference right now. When you work with a database that has been placed in production, however, these filters can be quite useful. For example, you can base the optimization on the queries created by power users, so that the query performance is best for the people who use the data the most frequently. 2. Click Next.

Part II:
Design Fundamentals
Your screen looks similar to this:
On the Review The Queries That Will Be Optimized page, you can see the frequency with which specific attribute combinations occur and the average duration of queries that include these combinations. 3. Click Next three times, select Performance Gain Reaches, type 100 in the % box, and then click Start on the Set Aggregation Options page. How did your usage-based aggregations compare to the previously designed aggregations If the number of aggregations isn t lower, it s possible you didn t create enough queries to change the default aggregation behavior. 4. When aggregation design is complete, click Finish twice to complete the wizard without processing the partition. Important
Be sure to reset the sampling rate of the query log to a more suitable value, such as the default value of 10, if you plan to use this optimization technique on your own databases.
