Notice that now the Product Category Average and the Grand Total for Average Reseller Sales both display $375. This scenario illustrates how the use of calculated members can get tricky. You must understand how business users need the data to be calculated when there is an intersection of calculated members, and then ensure that the order of the calculations in the Script Organizer produces correct results.

When you first create a cube, a default MDX script that defines calculations in the cube is also created. This script is identified by the Calculate command that appears first on the Calculation tab of the cube designer. You add to this script every time you create a new calculated member or a named set. This script tells the server to calculate the entire cube on the first pass. The MDX expressions and statements that you add to the MDX script then get processed in the order in which they appear in the Script Organizer. You can use the debugging features in Visual Studio to observe the interaction of calculations during execution of the MDX script. As you step through the script, you use the debugger s cube browser to slice and dice data or to review the calculated members at each step. You can also make changes to the script while debugging to correct problems that you find. In this procedure, you ll add a script assignment to hide measure values for a group of employees Abbas and employees managed by Abbas and then debug the MDX script. Override cube values with a script assignment 1. Click the Calculations tab, and then click the Script View button on the toolbar. Your screen looks like this:

Each calculation that you created in the Form View is a separate MDX statement in the MDX script that you see here. Notice that the sequence of each calculation in the Script Organizer corresponds to the sequence of each calculation in the script. 2. Position your cursor at the end of the CALCULATE; command, press Enter to create a new line, and then type Scope([Measures].Members);. The Scope statement is used to define a subcube that is, a specific collection of cube cells. Any MDX statements that you include with the Scope statement will apply only to this subcube. 3. Press Enter, type Descendants(, and then navigate through the cube metadata tree from the Employee dimension to the Employees hierarchy to Members, Sanchez, Welcker, and finally to Abbas. Drag Abbas to the right of the parenthesis, and then type )=NULL;. 4. Press Enter and type End Scope;. The complete MDX statement looks like this:

The effect of this script assignment is to replace any measure values that would normally display for the Abbas member (with key value 294) and the descendants of this member with a null value. This technique is useful when there are portions of the cube that you never want anyone to be able to see. 5. Deploy the project. When this operation is finished, click the Browse tab, click the Reconnect button, clear the grid, and then place all measures in the grid with the Employees hierarchy on rows. Right-click the CEO caption and click Show Empty Cells. Drill down from Sanchez to each lower level until you locate the Abbas member, then drill down one more level. The grid looks like this:

You can see that none of the measures for Abbas are visible because the script assignment replaced the cube values with nulls. However, a side effect of this script assignment is that the grand total for each measure is now incorrect because the aggregation of each measure considers the Abbas and descendant members to be nulls. You can step through the script using the debugger to see how this happens.
