This expression sets the goal at a 20% increase over the current Reseller Sales Amount. Later, you ll see how to create an expression that is based on an increase over a previous period of time. For now, you are setting a fixed amount so that you can study the mechanics of each component of a KPI. The Goal Expression indicates where the business wants to be its goal, for sales in this instance. Alternatively, this value could represent an industry benchmark against which a company wants to measure itself. 5. In the Status Indicator drop-down list, select Traffic Light. 6. In the Status Expression box, type -1. The value of the Status Expression box is ordinarily evaluated from an MDX expression, which you ll do later in this chapter. A valid status expression needs to return a value between -1 and 1. Here, -1 will assign a red traffic light status to the KPI. A value of 0 would result in a yellow traffic light, and a value of 1 would result in a green traffic light. 7. In the Trend Expression box, type -0.6. Like the status expression, a trend expression is normally defined as an MDX formula and must return a value between -1 and 1. The purpose of the trend expression is to compare a current value, typically defined by the Value expression to the same value at an earlier point in time. You ll work with this type of comparative expression later in this chapter, but for now you ll use a constant so you can see how the value affects the KPI display. Your screen looks like this:

Like the cube browser, the KPI browser displays KPIs so that you can review the KPI results during development. However, the client application used by business users is likely to provide a different interface for presenting and interacting with KPIs, so you should include a testing phase with the client application before deploying KPIs to a production environment. The value of Reseller Sales Amount is the grand total for this measure in the cube. The goal value is the result of multiplying this Reseller Sales Amount by 1.2. The traffic light displays a red light because the Status expression evaluates as -1. The trend arrow points downward because its value is negative and the degree of the angle of this arrow is determined by the numeric value of the Trend expression, which in this case is .6. 9. Click the Form View in the toolbar, change the Status Expression to 0 and the Trend Expression to 0.3. 10. Deploy the project, and then click the Browser View button in the KPI toolbar.

Now the traffic light displays a yellow light and the trend arrow is angled slightly upward. 11. Click the Form View in the toolbar, change the Status Expression to 1 and the Trend Expression to 1. 12. Deploy the project, and then click the Browser View button in the KPI toolbar. You can see that the traffic light now displays a green light and the trend arrow points upward. In the next procedure, you ll see how to construct a complex expression that applies business rules which define the conditions for a red, yellow, or green KPI.

Using MDX Expressions with Key Performance Indicators
In the previous procedure, you hard-coded the results into the Status and Trend Expressions box to see how the graphical representations change. Of course, you would never do this in production. You ll want to plan the expression that you will create for status and trend so that you accurately portray the data. If your actuals compare favorably to the goal, you want the expression to evaluate to 1. If your actuals are not making the desired progress to the goal, you might want the expression to evaluate to 0. If your actuals are unfavorable in relation to the goal, the expression should evaluate to -1. There are only three values for the traffic light corresponding to 1, 0, and -1 green, yellow, and red. A gauge, on the other hand, can use values between 1 and -1 to represent the status. Likewise, with the Trend, you want the expression to evaluate positively if the trend is good, neutrally if the trend is flat, and negatively if the trend is poor. Any value between 1 and -1 is valid for Trend. The indicator you use for Trend will change accordingly. For example, an arrow will point straight up when Trend is 1 and straight down when it is -1. The arrow is angled upward or downward by degrees depending on whether the Trend is closer to 1 or closer to -1.
