Defining Dimension Relationships
In 5, Designing Measure Groups and Measures, you were introduced to dimension usage as the definition of the relationship between dimension and each fact table. There are many types of relationships. So far, you ve seen that each dimension has a regular relationship to one or more measure groups. With a regular relationship, an attribute column in a dimension relates to a column in a fact table for that measure group. There are other special types of relationships that can exist between dimensions and fact tables. In this section, you ll learn how to define dimension usage for a referenced dimension as well as a many-to-many dimension.
Using a Referenced Relationship Type
When you want to use all tables in a snowflake schema as a single dimension, you can create a regular dimension that includes all tables in the snowflake. When you add the dimension to a cube, a regular relationship with the most granular table is automatically created. The Product dimension is an example of a snowflake schema that has a regular relationship with measure groups in the SSAS cube. However, there might be situations when you want to separate the tables in the snowflake and implement them as separate dimensions in a cube. If the non leaf-level table in a snowflake schema is indirectly related to the fact table through the leaf-level table (that is, the leaf-level that represents the granularity attribute in the fact
