When Reporting Services is part of your business intelligence (BI) infrastructure, you can easily create actions that execute these reports without having to build URLs by using an MDX expression. Of course, your client application is still required to support actions for this approach to work. When you create a Reporting action, you can simply specify the host server for Reporting Services and the path to the report. In this procedure, you ll add a new Reporting action to open the Reporting Services Web application and then display a report for a selected reseller. Create a reporting action 1. Switch to Visual Studio, click the Actions tab in the Cube Designer, click the New Reporting Action button on the Actions toolbar, and then name the action Reseller Sales Order Details. 2. In the Target Type drop-down list, select Attribute Members.

3. In the Target Object drop-down list, expand Reseller, select the Reseller attribute (that is, the attribute named Reseller), and then click OK. The Target Object is now Reseller.Reseller. 4. In the Server Name box, type localhost. 5. In the Report Path box, type ReportServer /Sample SSAS Reports/Order Details. This Report Path string will be concatenated with the server name to build the URL to the Order Details report on the report server, much like you did with the expression in the previous procedure. However, this time, you don t need to include any of the report server commands or a parameter in the string. Notice that you can specify a format for the report. The default is HTML5, but you can change this value to HTML3, Excel, or PDF. 6. Expand the Parameters section, type Reseller in the first box in the Parameter Name column, and then type [Reseller].[Reseller].CurrentMember.Name in the Parameter Value column of the same row. In the previous procedure, you embedded the parameter name and the expression used to derive the parameter value in the URL. Here you are using the Actions graphical interface to specify the parameter and assign an expression to that parameter, which at run time will be used to construct a URL when the user launches this action. You can also click the ellipsis button in the Parameter Value box to access the MDX Builder if you prefer to use a graphical interface when creating an expression for the parameter value. 7. Deploy the project, click the Browser tab, and then click Reconnect. 8. Drag Product off the grid, expand Reseller, and then drag the Reseller attribute to rows. 9. Click Active Cycling to select this single attribute, right-click it to display the context menu, and then click Reseller Sales Order Details. Notice that Product Detail is not an option. An action is only available when you rightclick on a target object for which an action is defined. Since Product Detail only applies to members of the Product attribute hierarchy of the Product dimensions, the associated action is not available when you right-click on members of the Reseller hierarchy.

With this type of report link, you can scroll through multiple pages of a report, export the report to another file format, or change the current reseller for which details are displayed. You can disable features by using Reporting Services commands just as you did in the previous procedure, by adding the command to the Report Path. For example, if you want to remove the ability for the user to change the Reseller on this report, use this Report Path:

Adding Drillthrough
Another popular action type is drillthrough, which you can implement to provide access to detailed data that you don t want to store in the cube. A drillthrough action retrieves specific rows from that fact table that created a specific value in the cube. Enabling drillthrough does not provide access to original source data, such as the transaction tables used to populate the fact table only to the fact table. Even though drillthrough only goes to the fact table, it can be extremely useful in many situations and it s very easy to implement. In this procedure, you ll add a new drillthrough action to display detail records for Internet sales orders. Create a drillthrough action 1. Switch to Visual Studio, click the Actions tab of the Cube Designer, and then click the New Drillthrough Action button on the Actions toolbar.
