Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Editions, Capacity Limits, and Licensing
SQL Server 2005 Capacity Limits
Although rare, every once in a while you may encounter a SQL Server 2005 component preset capacity limit. The most common capacity limits are maximum number of columns per index and maximum number of indexes/statistics per table. There will also be times when you have questions about the maximum number of rows you can have in a table or the number of database instances you can host on a single system. Table 2-11 helps answer these questions by listing the maximum values for various SQL Server database engine objects.
Table 2-11 Maximum Capacity Limits for SQL Server 2005 SQL Server 2005 Database Engine Object Batch size Bytes per short string column Bytes per GROUP BY, ORDER BY Bytes per index key Bytes per foreign key Bytes per primary key Bytes per row Bytes in source text of a stored procedure Bytes per varchar(max), varbinary(max), xml, text, or image column Characters per ntext or nvarchar(max) column Clustered indexes per table Columns in GROUP BY, ORDER BY Maximum Values 65,536 Network Packet Size 8,000 8,060 900 900 900 8,060 The lesser of batch size or 250 MB 231 1 230 1 1 Limited only by number of bytes (see Bytes per GROUP BY, ORDER BY)
