After you define the dimension and cube structures during the development phase of an Analysis Services database, you must run processes to read the source data and load it into storage on a regular basis, although certain types of storage don t require physically moving and restructuring the data. It s generally not practical to run these processes manually. You can use Integration Services to access source data, prepare new storage structures if necessary, and then process database objects to add new records or to refresh dimensions and cubes. Use SQL Server Agent to schedule execution of Integration Services on a periodic basis. After processing, the cube is ready for browsing by end users. A cube can also be a data source for reports developed for use with Reporting Services and a source for a Notification Services event provider to send information when a defined condition is met.

Analysis Services includes several tools for developers and administrators to use when designing, deploying, processing, and managing Analysis Services databases and related objects. Analysis Services also includes client components to send commands and queries from user applications to the Analysis Services server. Many of these components are

Analysis Services Service Manages database object metadata and server resources, processes transactions, creates aggregations, stores data, and responds to client application queries. Unified Dimensional Model (UDM) Combines relational and dimensional models of one or more underlying data sources to centralize common business calculations and other business logic and to support ad hoc queries while shielding end users from the technical details about the data sources Business Intelligence Development Studio and deployment of the UDM Supports the development, testing,

Designing Analysis Services Projects
You perform all design work using SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio, which is introduced in 21, Integration Services. If you skipped that

chapter, you should turn back to review one section, The Development Environment, for an overview of this integrated development environment. First-time users of this environment are often initially confused by the many windows to work in and by the number of properties associated with each database object. With practice comes familiarity, so be patient. It won t take long to learn how to navigate the interface effectively to build rich analytical solutions. Unfortunately, space doesn t permit a thorough explanation of all features in this interface, but you will learn enough in this section to build a basic solution and begin experiencing some of the benefits that Analysis Services has to offer. More Info For a solid introduction to Analysis Services using hands-on tutorials, refer to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services Step by Step, by Reed Jacobson, Stacia Misner, and Hitachi Consulting, Microsoft Press, 2006. A deeper discussion of Analysis Services, with an emphasis on developing applications based on Analysis Services, is available in Applied Microsoft Analysis Services 2005 by Teo Lachev, Prologika Press, 2005. To learn how to integrate Analysis Services into a complete data warehousing architecture using Microsoft technology, take a look at The Microsoft Data Warehouse Toolkit: With SQL Server 2005 and the Microsoft Business Intelligence Toolset by Joy Mundy, Warren Thornthwaite, and Ralph Kimball, Wiley, 2006.
