A data source view (DSV), first introduced in 21, is a central component of the UDM. At minimum, it provides an abstracted layer of the source data structures so you can work on your Analysis Services project without maintaining a connection to the source as previously mentioned. Typically, however, you enhance the DSV to provide user-friendly names, enforce business rules, and create relationships between tables for referential integrity. Some people consider it a best practice to perform these enhancements back in the source database, but the DSV gives you the flexibility to make changes when you don t have the appropriate permissions in the database. To create and modify a DSV, follow these steps: 1. To follow this example, you must complete the steps described in the previous sections of this chapter. In Solution Explorer, right-click the Data Source Views folder, click New Data Source View, and then click Next if the Welcome page displays. 2. Select an available data source. Notice you have the option to create a data source now by clicking New Data Source if you started the Data Source View Wizard before creating a data source. To continue the example from the previous section in which you create a data source, select AdventureWorks and then click Next. 3. Double-click a table or view to add it to the Included Objects list. Alternatively, you can select one or more tables and then click the arrow buttons to add to the list. You can also add a table and then click the Add Related Tables button to automatically add tables that have a foreign key relationship with the selected table. For this example, add the following tables: Production.Product, Production.ProductCategory, Production.ProductSubcategory, and Sales.SalesOrderDetail, as shown in Figure 22-4. When you are finished, click Next. Note

As discussed previously, an OLAP database is often created using tables from a data warehouse, and that s still the preferred approach when a data warehouse exists. However, you might want to work directly with an OLTP schema while you re prototyping the Analysis Services database objects or when you want to take advantage of near-real-time analysis of

OLTP data. We re using AdventureWorks in this example to illustrate this point.

4. Change the DSV name if desired, and then click Finish. 5. Right-click the table header for the SalesOrderDetail table, point to Replace Table, and then click With New Named Query. A named query is similar to a view in a relational database. You use a Transact-SQL statement to construct a result set that produces a subset of the original data, adds derived columns to concatenate data or compute new values, or combines data from multiple tables. The DSV must have at least one table or view added before you can create a named query. Note
If you plan to add only a derived column, another option is to create a named calculation. Right-click a table header in the data source view, click New Named Calculation, and provide an expression in the SQL syntax applicable for the data source. There are no performance differences between a named query and a named calculation.
6. Above the diagram pane, you see the Query Definition toolbar. The last button on this toolbar is the Add Table button. Click the Add Table button, double-click
