Certainly, making regular backups should be a standard administration task, but it s also one more way to move a database from one server to another. In SQL Server Management Studio, connect to Analysis Services, right-click the Analysis Services database, and click Back Up. When you create a backup, both the data and the metadata are stored in a single file. There is no restriction on the size of the database. When you create the backup, you can control whether an existing backup can be overwritten, specify whether the backup file should be compressed, or encrypt the backup file with a password by selecting the applicable options, as shown in Figure 22-16.

You can automate this process by using SQL Server Agent. In the Backup Database dialog box, click Script in the toolbar and select Script Action To Clipboard. Create a new SQL Server job and then create a new step. (For more information about creating and automating jobs, refer to the SQL Server Books Online topic, Creating Jobs. ) Change the Type to SQL Server Analysis Services Command and then paste the script into the Command box.

When you need to restore the backup, right-click the Databases folder for the Analysis Services instance in SQL Server Management Studio, provide a name for the database, and provide the path to the backup file. You can specify whether to overwrite an existing database and whether to restore security information from the backup. If you encrypted the database during backup, you ll need the password to restore it.

Every Analysis Services cube has one partition for each measure group by default. If the fact table on which a measure group has fewer than 50 million rows, you don t need to worry about adding more partitions. However, for larger fact tables, partitioning is a critical strategy for managing physical storage, minimizing processing time, and boosting query performance. While you can use Developer Edition to design and implement partitions on a development server, you must use Enterprise Edition for your production server.

Creating a Partition
You can design partitions on the Partitions tab of the cube designer in Visual Studio, but once a database is in production you ll likely use SQL Server Management Studio to create, modify, or delete partitions. Both environments use the Partition Wizard to create a new partition. To use the Partition Wizard in SQL Server Management Studio, follow these steps. 1. In SQL Server Management Studio, connect to Analysis Services, and then expand the following folders: Databases, Adventure Works DW, Cubes, Adventure Works, Measure Groups, Internet Sales, and Partitions. There are four existing partitions for the Internet Sales measure group, as shown in Figure 22-17.

Analysis Services
Note
To follow this example, deploy the sample Adventure Works solution using the Analysis Services Deployment Wizard which is described in the previous section of this chapter. The location of the database file is <drive>:\<SQL Server install directory>\90\Tools\Samples\AdventureWorks Analysis Services Project.

You can double-click a partition in Object Explorer to open the Partition Properties dialog box. Each of the Internet Sales partitions is configured identically, except the source data for each partition is based on a different query which separates the fact table into four sets of sales transactions, one for each year of data. 2. Right-click the Partitions folder, click New Partition, and then click Next on the Welcome page. Select the fact table associated with the measure group, which in this case is dbo.FactInternetSales, and then click Next. 3. On the Restrict Rows page of the Partition Wizard, you define which data will be selected from the fact table and loaded into the partition. If you maintain separate fact tables for each partition, you re done with the wizard and can click Finish. However, if you plan to create multiple partitions from a single fact table, you need to create a SELECT statement with a WHERE clause to specify which data should be loaded into this partition. Select the Specify A Query To Restrict Rows check box.
