The Query box is automatically populated with a SELECT statement that includes all columns in the fact table as defined in the Data Source View. 4. Scroll to bottom of the Query box and type orderdatekey > 1280 after WHERE to add a filter to the SELECT statement. This query is now modified to include data for sales occurring after the last date included in the Internet_Sales_2004 partition. In your own partition, you should use a WHERE clause that specifies both a beginning and ending range. Click the Check button to confirm the query parses correctly, and then click Next. Important Be very careful when defining the WHERE clause here. There will be no warning if rows selected by this query overlap with rows in another partition s source query. 5. On the Processing And Storage Locations page of the Partition Wizard, you can override the default settings and specify a different location for the partition. It could be in a different location than the existing partitions or even on a different server. Before you decide to implement remote partitions, however, be sure to read Creating and Managing a Remote Partition in SQL Server Books Online to verify that you can meet the requirements. Click Next. 6. Change the name of the partition, and select Design Aggregations Later. (You ll learn more about aggregations in a later section of this chapter.) You can optionally process the partition at this point. Since there is no data in the fact table that meets the criteria you specified in the query, you can skip processing. Click Finish. The new partition displays in the Partitions folder. At this point, you ve defined only which data from which fact table will be loaded into the partition. You can also use SQL Server Management Studio merge partitions if you want to combine data from multiple partitions into a single partition, but you ll need to redefine the source query for the final partition because the query won t change automatically. You can change the source query in the partition s Partition Properties dialog box.

Multidimensional OLAP (MOLAP) Keeps detailed data and aggregations in a multidimensional compressed proprietary structure. With this method, the relational source is accessed only during processing, and queries are resolved entirely from the multidimensional store. It provides the fastest query performance, but it requires a periodic refresh to stay consistent with the relational data. On average, the amount of space required to maintain a copy of detailed data into the MOLAP store is about 20 percent more than the space required for the relational source (without indexes). The query performance gained by using MOLAP more than compensates for additional space required. Hybrid OLAP (HOLAP) Keeps aggregations only in the multidimensional store and leaves detailed data in the relational source. Processing is faster than MOLAP because the activities are limited to calculating and storing the aggregations. Queries that require detailed data are slower than queries that can be resolved using aggregations. This option may be best for historical data that is infrequently accessed. Relational OLAP (ROLAP) Keeps detailed data and aggregations in the relational source. Queries run more slowly as a consequence and processing runs more slowly when aggregations are involved. The most common reason to use ROLAP is to support real-time analysis when the source database is continually updated. Note

Unless you have a good reason not to, you should always use the MOLAP storage mode. It s optimized specifically for best performance and processing and provides efficient storage, all important characteristics for an OLAP product.

To configure the storage mode of a partition in SQL Server Management Studio, follow these steps: 1. In SQL Server Management Studio, connect to Analysis Services, expand the Databases folder, expand any database folder, expand the Cubes folder, and then expand the appropriate Measure Groups and Partitions folders. Right-click a partition, click Properties, and then click Proactive Caching. 2. Move the slider to a different storage setting, as shown in Figure 22-18. Here you have many more options than the three storage modes explained at the beginning of this section, but they are simply variations on the same theme. Each of
