Enterprise reports are developed using SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio, introduced in 21, Integration Services. This integrated development environment is simply Visual Studio with business intelligence templates. The Report Server Project template provides many tools you can use to build feature-rich reports, but we can provide only a brief introduction of the possibilities in this chapter. More Info For more hands-on tutorials covering the complete enterprise reporting life cycle, refer to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Step by Step by Stacia Misner and Hitachi Consulting, Microsoft Press, 2006. Professional SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services by Paul Turley, Todd Bryan, James Counihan, George McKee, and Dave DuVarney, Wrox Press, 2006, explains Reporting Services from a developer s perspective and provides a variety of examples of standard and customized solutions. You can learn how Reporting Services fits into a

Enterprise Reports
An enterprise report is formatted information that is formally distributed within a workgroup, to all employees in an organization, or even to external recipients such as customers or shareholders. This type of report is typically accessible from a central location with security applied, but it may also be distributed on a regular schedule via e-mail or added as a link to a corporate portal. The key tasks related to authoring an enterprise report include defining the queries used to retrieve data for the report, organizing the data into a specific layout, and formatting the report to enhance its appearance.
Starting a Reporting Services Project
When you start a new project in Visual Studio, you select the Report Server Project template in the Business Intelligence Projects folder and provide a name and location for your project. A Report Server Project provides several windows for report development, as shown in Figure 23-1, which illustrates a report you develop using examples in this section. The windows you use while building this report are described in the following list:
Solution Explorer By default, this window displays in the upper right corner of your screen. As you add data sources and reports to your project, a corresponding file is added to the applicable folder in this window. You can rename this file, but be sure to keep the assigned file extension (such as .rds or .rdl), or they won t work. Properties This window displays in the bottom right corner of your screen by default. If you select an object added to your report, you can view and modify its properties in this window. Toolbox This window contains all of the items that you can add to a report, such as a table, an image, or a freestanding textbox, for example. Datasets This window displays a tree view of all data fields that you can add to your report as placeholders for actual data during report development. Report Designer This window is the main workspace in which you will work to develop a report. The report designer separates your work activities into the following three tabs.
Data On this tab, you define which data will be included in the report, including its current location.
