It s a best practice to use a shared data source because you can make changes, such as using a different server or different authentication method, in one place rather than open each report individually to adjust reportspecific data sources.

Creating a Dataset A dataset is a collection of several items a pointer to a data source, a query that defines how to retrieve data for the report, and a set of fields created to describe each column returned by the query. When you create a new dataset, you select an existing shared data source or create a new report-specific data source, and then provide a query. Whereas a shared data source is created outside the context of a specific report, a dataset is always associated with a specific report and cannot be shared by many reports. To create a new report and add a dataset, follow these steps: 1. In Visual Studio, start a new Report Server Project and add a data source as described in the previous example. 2. Right-click the Reports folder in the Solution Explorer window, point to Add, and then click New Item. Note

The name of the report you provide here will be the report name the user sees when navigating through the list of available reports. Report names should be user-friendly and should provide information about the contents of the report. You can use spaces to separate words in the report name. Be sure to keep the file extension!

4. On the Dataset toolbar located on the Data tab of the Report Designer, select New Dataset in the drop-down list. In the Dataset dialog box, replace the default name of the dataset, DataSet1, with a more meaningful name if desired. You can create a report-specific data source for the report by selecting New Data Source in the Data Source drop-down list. For this example, select the shared data source created in the previous example.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence
Note
The dataset name cannot include a space. If your report will use only one dataset, the name isn t important, but when you have many datasets in the same report, it s helpful to choose a name that distinguishes the current dataset from others.
5. You can type directly in the Query String box of the Dataset dialog box, or you can click OK to type a query string on the Data tab of the Report Designer. For simple reports, you do not need to access the other tabs in this dialog box. For more information about using this dialog box, refer to the related SQL Server Books Online topic, such as Dataset (Fields Tab, Report Designer), or the books recommended at the beginning of this chapter. To continue this example, click OK without providing a query string here. 6. Click Generic Query Designer, the fourth button on the Dataset toolbar, to toggle from the Generic Query Designer to the Query Builder. When the Query Builder is available, the Data tab contains the following four panes:
Diagram pane In this pane, you can add or remove tables, select columns from tables, or create joins between tables, among other tasks, by using a graphical interface. Grid pane Use this pane to modify columns, such as adding an alias, specifying a sort order, or applying a filter. SQL pane You use this pane to view the SQL statement created from the selections made in the Diagram or Grid panes or to modify the statement directly. Results pane This pane shows you the query results if you click the Run button in the Dataset toolbar to execute the query.
7. Modify the statement in the SQL pane to produce a statement like the following:
SELECT DimTime.CalendarYear, DimReseller.BusinessType, DimReseller.ResellerName, SUM(FactResellerSales.SalesAmount) AS TotalSales FROM FactResellerSales INNER JOIN DimReseller ON FactResellerSales.ResellerKey = DimReseller.ResellerKey INNER JOIN DimTime ON FactResellerSales.OrderDateKey = DimTime.TimeKey
