Now you re ready to learn how to build a cube by using the business intelligence templates available in Microsoft Visual Studio. To develop BI solutions in SQL Server 2005, you use special designers integrated into Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. If you have used any recent version of Visual Studio to develop applications, the development environment will be familiar. By using Visual Studio, you can organize your development work into a project. This is particularly useful in a large-scale environment, because you can have multiple developers working on a single cube project, and you can use Microsoft Visual Source Safe or Microsoft Team Foundation to store backup copies of all the project files. If you have never used Visual Studio, you may see some windows and toolbars that are not familiar to you. Many of the environment tools simplify the process

of building a BI application. Some of the tools, however, do not relate to BI projects, and you can simply ignore them. If you originally acquire Visual Studio as part of SQL Server 2005, it will include only the business intelligence designers. If you acquire other Visual Studio tools for example, VB.NET or C#.NET those design tools are integrated into the same environment. Within the Visual Studio environment, the business intelligence designers are grouped together. For convenience, we will refer to the business intelligence designers of Visual Studio as Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS). Within the BIDS environment, you can create Analysis Services projects that structure data for high-performance analysis, develop Integration Services packages that prepare and load data for use with your Analysis Services projects, and build Reporting Services reports that present the results of analysis to the business user community. If you also have other development tools, you can include C#.NET or ASP.NET applications in the same solution as your BI projects. This book focuses only on Analysis Services, but many resources exist to help you take full advantage of any Visual Studio tools that you own. When you use BIDS to develop an Analysis Services project, that project becomes a database when you deploy it to an Analysis Server. You can also create an Analysis Services project in BIDS to make design changes to an existing Analysis Services database. To perform general maintenance tasks on a production database for example, to process a database object you use SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) instead. You will learn about SSMS in 13, Managing Deployment.
