Build a new cube 1. In Solution Explorer, right-click the Cubes folder, and then click New Cube. The Welcome page of the Cube Wizard is displayed. If you want to bypass this page in the future, just select the Don t Show This Page Again check box to disable the page permanently. 2. Click Next. If you were using a data source, the Cube Wizard would lead you through the necessary steps. Without a data source, the next step is to create measures and dimensions. The templates make this process easy. In this procedure, you ll define two measures for the cube, Sales Amount and Order Quantity. Add measures 1. To clear the selection of all measures, click the box in the header row to the left of Measure Name, and then select the check boxes to the left of Internet Sales Amount and Internet Order Quantity. Notice that these measures are part of a measure group called Internet Sales. If you scroll through the list of measures, you ll see there are other measure groups: Internet Orders, Internet Customers, Sales Reasons, Reseller Sales, Reseller Orders, Sales Summary, Sales Orders, and Sales Targets. Each measure group is a collection of measures that comes from the same fact table. 2. Scroll back to the top of the list of measures, click the box that contains the measure name Internet Sales Amount, and change the measure name to Sales Dollars. 3. Repeat the previous step to change Internet Order Quantity to Sales Units. The measure names provided by each template can be changed to something more suitable for your needs. If you forget to change the name in this step of the Cube Wizard, you can change it later in the Cube Designer. 4. In the Measure Group column for the Sales Dollars and Sales Units rows, change the name of the Internet Sales measure group to Sales. The Define New Measures page of the Cube Wizard will now look like this:

5. Click Next. In this procedure, you ll add the Product and Time dimensions to the cube. Add dimensions 1. To clear the selection of the template dimensions, click the box in the header row to the left of Type. The template contains several dimensions that you can include in your cube. Each dimension contains several stock attributes which you cannot change within the Cube Wizard, but you can change them freely after you complete the wizard. Select the SCD box if you want to include attributes for Slowly Changing Dimensions for tracking the start and end dates as well as the current status of a dimension record. 2. Click the respective check boxes to select the Products and Time dimensions. 3. Maximize the Cube Wizard window to view all of the dimension s attributes from the template. Your screen looks like this:
Notice the default attributes for each dimension. You always have the option to remove unneeded attributes or add desired attributes after you complete the Cube Wizard. You now have all the dimensions that you need added to the cube. You re ready to move to the next step. 4. Click Next. In this procedure, you ll specify the beginning and ending dates of the data that you wish to analyze as July 1, 2001, and December 31, 2006, respectively.
