Notice the error message: The cube cannot be browsed. Verify that the cube has been deployed and processed. As with dimensions, you cannot browse a cube immediately after building it with the wizard because the cube must be deployed to the server where it is processed. Remember that processing is the operation that loads data into the cube structure. Also, it s important to note if you later make changes to the cube by using the Cube Designer, including something as simple as changing a FormatString property, you must still deploy the cube to the Analysis Server before browsing. 2. In Solution Explorer, right-click the SSAS Step by Step project, and then click Deploy. 3. When deployment has completed successfully, click the Reconnect button on the Browser toolbar. 4. Drag Measures from the metadata pane, and drop it in the area of the grid labeled Drop Totals or Detail Fields Here. When you drag the Measures object, all measures regardless of measure group are added to the grid as a group. Notice the formatting strings have been applied to each measure, which makes it a lot easier to read the values than if you had skipped that step. However, this browser interface aligns the numbers to the left, which makes comparing values more challenging. 5. Click the Reseller Order Quantity column caption to select the entire column, right-click the caption, and then select Commands and Options. 6. On the Format tab, click the Align Right button. 7. Click the Reseller Sales Amount caption, and then click the Align Right button.

The dialog box remains open even when you click on a different measure. All formatting changes are applied to the currently selected item in the grid. 8. Repeat the previous step for all of the remaining measures, and then close the dialog box when you are finished. Your screen looks like this:

You can also be selective about which measures are visible in the browser. If, after placing measures on the grid, you decide you want to focus on just a few measures, you can remove the other measures one by one. 9. In the grid, click the Reseller Order Quantity caption, drag it to any spot in the metadata pane, and drop it when you see the Delete symbol (the letter X). This action doesn t change the measure s position in the metadata tree; it simply removes it from the browser grid. 10. Repeat the previous step to remove Internet Order Quantity from the browser grid. 11. Expand Product, drag Subcategory to the grid, and then drop it in the area labeled Drop Row Fields Here. Remember that Reseller Sales Amount and Internet Sales Amount come from measure groups that have Product as a granularity attribute, while Product Forecast comes from a measure group that has Subcategory as a granularity attribute. The values you see in the grid for all measures are summarized by Subcategory. Even though Subcategory is not represented in the fact tables underlying Reseller Sales and Internet Sales measure groups, there is a defined relationship between their granularity attribute, Product, and the Subcategory attribute. product sales by Subcategory. You can see this relationship in the Dimension Designer for the Product dimension. 12. In Solution Explorer, double-click Product.dim. If necessary, click the Dimension Structure tab. Expand Product in the Attributes pane. Your screen looks like this:

In this example, Product is the target attribute and the others listed under it Color, List Price, Size, and Subcategory are source attributes. The relationship between a target attribute and its source attributes is known as a direct attribute relationship; it is used by the cube to compute aggregated values for each of the source attributes when the fact table contains only the Product key. 13. Expand the Subcategory target attribute. Subcategory only has one direct attribute relationship with Category. Because Category is related to Subcategory and Subcategory is related to Product, the cube can derive the Category values when it has the Product key from FactResellerSales or FactInternetSales. This relationship between Product and Category is known as an indirect attribute relationship. Remember the message in the Define Relationship dialog box at the end of the previous procedure It was a reminder that the cube can only aggregate data when there is a direct or indirect relationship between attributes in the same dimension. You have now seen that all attributes of the Product dimension are directly or indirectly related to Product, which is the granularity attribute for the Reseller Sales and Internet Sales measure groups. Therefore, any of these attributes can be used to view the aggregated measures for these two measure groups.
