A semiadditive measure is different from the additive measures you ve seen thus far because it can be summed along some, but not all, dimensions in a cube. A common use of a semiadditive measure is a value for a fixed point in time (also known as a snapshot), such as inventory quantity. Inventory quantity can be summed up along the Product dimension to find out how many bikes are in stock on a given day, but you can t sum this measure across the Time dimension. For example, the number of bikes you had in stock at the end of the first quarter can t be added to the number of bikes you had in stock at the end of the second quarter (at least, not if you want the correct result!). The measure of inventory on hand over time requires you to look at the value at the end of the time period only, not the sum of all values over the period. When you add a semiadditive measure to a cube, whether using the Cube Wizard or manually adding it by using the Cube Designer, you must change its default aggregation behavior.

Now that your cube is created, can you enhance it with additional measure groups and measures Of course! Sometimes, you ll need to add another fact table to your DSV to create a new measure group. Other times, you ll simply add more measures to an existing measure group from the underlying fact table. You can easily make these additions to your cube by using the Cube Designer. But first, be sure the supporting data for the measure is available in the DSV either by adding new tables to the DSV or by confirming that an existing fact table contains the desired measure. In this procedure, you ll add the Inventory measure group to the cube. Add a measure group to a cube 1. In Solution Explorer, double-click SSAS Step by Step DW.dsv, right-click the background of the Diagram pane, and then click Add/Remove Tables. 2. Double-click dbo.FactInventory in the list of Available Objects to add it to the Included Objects list, and then click OK. The TimeKey column in this table joins to the DimTime table and ProductKey joins to the DimProduct table. The InStkUnit column is the only measure in this table and contains a count of each product s inventory on the first day of the month. 3. Switch to the SSAS Cube Designer, right-click anywhere in the Measures pane on the Cube Structure tab, click New Measure Group, click FactInventory, and then click OK. 4. Rename the new measure group as Inventory. 5. Expand the Inventory measure group.

Even though the fact table contained only one measure, another measure FactInventoryCount is automatically included. Because count measures are commonly found in cubes, the Cube Wizard and the Cube Designer both suggest this measure when you add a measure group. You have the option of including this measure or not. 6. Right-click Fact InventoryCount, click Delete, and then click OK to confirm deletion of the object. 7. Rename In Stk Unit as Units In Stock, and then change its FormatString property value to #,#. 8. In Solution Explorer, right-click the SSAS Step by Step project, click Deploy, click the Browser tab, and then click the Reconnect button on the Browser toolbar. 9. Click anywhere in the grid to activate the Browser toolbar, and then click the Clear Results button in the Browser toolbar to remove all dimensions and measures from the grid. 10. In the metadata tree, expand Measures, expand Inventory, and then drag Units in Stock to the area of the grid labeled Drop Total or Detail Fields Here. 11. Expand Time, and then drag Time.Calendar, the calendar hierarchy, to the area of the grid labeled Drop Column Fields Here. 12. Expand Product, and then drag Category to the area of the grid labeled Drop Row Fields Here.
