The Type property of a dimension has many possible values. You can use the Dimension Wizard to automatically set the type, or you can change the property manually in the Dimension Designer. Analysis Server uses this type to manage the behavior of account and time dimensions, but otherwise, the value of the Type property has no direct effect on the server. This property is available for a client application to inspect. For example, some Graphical Information Systems (GIS) applications can use a dimension with its Type property set to Geography to display analytical data on maps. You should refer to the documentation of your client application to determine whether this feature is supported and to learn how to configure a dimension correctly for the client application.

To properly aggregate the values along the Account dimension, each member of the dimension needs its own aggregation rule. The rule for Current Assets should be: Add me to my parent. The rule for Taxes should be: Subtract me from my parent. The rule for Headcount should be: Don t aggregate me at all. With a parent-child dimension, you can include a column in the dimension table that specifies a unique rule for each member. The aggregation rule consists of a single-character code. The codes are simply the arithmetic operators: plus (+) for addition, minus (-) for subtraction, asterisk (*) for multiplication, and slash (/) for division. In addition, a tilde (~) is used to prevent the member from aggregating at all. These codes are called unary operators because each value gets its own operator. Note

Analysis Services has a special property called the UnaryOperatorColumn which applies only to the parent attribute in a parent-child dimension. You use this property to specify the column in a dimension table that is used to store the unary operator (+, -, *, /, and ~). In this procedure, you ll add a new measure group to the cube and then browse the cube to see how values incorrectly aggregate before you specify the UnaryOperatorColumn for the Account dimension. Browse the default aggregations of an Account dimension 1. In Solution Explorer, double-click SSAS Step by Step DW.dsv, right-click the background of the diagram pane, click Add/Remove Tables, double-click dbo.FactFinance to add the table to the Included Objects list, and then click OK.

Your screen looks like this:
Notice the relationship between DimAccount and FactFinance using the AccountKey in each table. 2. Open the Cube Designer for the SSAS cube, and, on the Cube Structure tab, right-click the Measures pane background, and then click New Measure. Alternatively, you could choose the option to add a new measure group, but this would add every numeric column in the selected table which, in the case of FactFinance, includes key columns that you would not want to use as measures. 3. Select FactFinance in the Source Table drop-down list, click Amount in the Source Column list, and then click OK. You have the option to change the aggregate function in the New Measure dialog box by changing the Usage value, but for now you will use the Sum aggregate function in order to observe how aggregation behavior changes when you later change the aggregate function. 4. With the Amount measure selected in the Measures pane, find the FormatString property in the Properties pane and type $#,#. 5. Right-click FactFinance in the measures pane, click Rename, and then type Finance. 6. Deploy the project. When deployment is complete, click the Browser tab of the Cube Designer, and then click the Reconnect button. 7. Expand Measures, expand Finance, and then drag Amount to the area of the grid labeled Drop Totals Or Detail Fields Here. 8. Right-click the Amount value displayed in the grid, click Commands And Options, click the Align Right button, and then close the Commands And Options dialog box.
