4. Right-click the first row in the table for the Resellers Sales partition, click Design Aggregations to launch the Aggregation Design Wizard, and then click Next. You can also click the Design Aggregations link on the partition page to start the Aggregation Design Wizard. 5. On the Specify Storage and Caching Options page, click Next. You learn more about these options in 12. 6. Click Count. Your screen looks like this:

The wizard counts rows in the fact table as well as rows in the partition. In this case, the partition includes the entire fact table, so the counts are the same. Alternatively, you can enter an Estimated Count or a Partition Count directly, which you ll do in a later procedure. Estimated Count is the default count for the partition. If you specify a Partition Count, that number is used instead of Estimated Count when designing aggregations. If both Estimated Count and Partition Count are zero, you cannot design aggregations. For now, you ll use the count generated by the wizard. In a later step, you ll change these values to observe how counts influence aggregation design. 7. Click Next, and on the Set Aggregation Options page of the wizard, select Performance Gain Reaches, and then click Start.

By choosing this option to design aggregations, the wizard will calculate possible aggregations until it exhausts all possibilities for the specified performance gain (unless you click Stop first). You have no control over which aggregations it selects. For most databases, the default performance gain setting provides enough aggregation for very good performance. If you later find that queries are executing too slowly, you can add aggregations then. As you increase the performance percentage, remember that the disk space required to reach 10 percent optimization is less, sometimes by an order of magnitude, than the amount required to go from 10 percent to 20 percent. As the wizard designs aggregations, you can watch its progress in the graph. You can stop the wizard at any time if you decide to change the options for designing aggregations and want to restart the design process. When the wizard finishes its calculations, the number of aggregations that have been designed displays at the bottom of the page. In the graph, you can see the relationship between the increase in performance (on the Y-axis) and the amount of disk space consumed (on the X-axis) as a result of the current aggregation design. At some point, the amount of disk space required is more costly than the benefits gained by relatively little improved query performance. The goal of aggregation optimization is to get the best performance increase without unnecessarily consuming disk space. 8. Click Next, select Deploy And Process Now, and then click Finish.

9. Click Run. When processing is complete, expand each processing step to view the details. Processing the partition runs one or more SQL queries against the underlying tables to load data into the cube and to calculate aggregations. In the Process Progress dialog box, you can view the status of processing, the duration of processing by partition, and the query string used for processing. If multiple partitions were ready for processing when you started this operation, the progress of each partition would be listed separately in this dialog box. 10. Click Close twice to close all dialog boxes.
Inspecting Aggregations
When you process the aggregations, the cube updates an XML for Analysis (XMLA) file that corresponds to the partition. This file contains information that Analysis Services uses to load the cube data, as well as to create storage for aggregations and load aggregated data into storage. The aggregation definitions are numbered beginning with number 0 and include information on each dimension and any attributes used in the aggregation. In this procedure, you ll review the aggregation definitions in the partition s XMLA file. Examine aggregations for a dimension in a cube partition 1. In the Solution Explorer toolbar, click the Show All Files button.
