The pivot currency is the standard against which all other exchange rates are measured. Its value is always 1. For example, if you establish the US Dollar (USD) as the pivot currency, you define exchange rates as .549 AUD per 1 USD, .630 CAD per 1 USD, and .972 EUR per 1 USD. You will always have a pivot currency in a currency conversion. The local currency is the currency used when adding transactions to the fact table. If you have a European subsidiary, the local currency for the European transactions might be Euros, while local currency might be pesos for transactions generated by your Mexican subsidiary. When you store transactions of multiple currencies in a fact table, the cube must be able to identify which currency is associated with each record. You can either include the currency identifier in the transaction itself as a dimension key column, or you can associate a currency with a dimension used in the transaction. For example, you include a subsidiary identifier as a key column in the fact table and store the currency identifier in the subsidiary dimension table. The reporting currency is used when you analyze or report results. To analyze and compare sales data across locations, you need to convert all sales measures into a common currency if you store local currency in the fact table. If you want the flexibility to convert transactions into any currency, you use a many-to-many relationship. For example, the analysts in your Japanese subsidiary could choose a different reporting currency than analysts in the Bolivian subsidiary. Alternatively, you could convert all local currencies in the fact table to a single, common currency using a many-to-one relationship. In this case, the reporting currency is the same as the pivot currency.

Because the measures in the sales fact tables are associated with a certain day, their converted values must reflect the exchange rate that was current on that day. You use a special fact table, such as FactCurrencyRate in the SSAS Step by Step DW relational database, to store exchange rates by currency and by time. These rates are used to convert the local currency in the fact tables to the pivot currency and then again to convert the pivot currency to the reporting currency. The FactCurrencyRate should have a relationship to a time dimension and a currency dimension, such as DimTime and DimCurrency, as shown in the SSAS Step by Step DW database. When you create a measure group for the currency fact table, you need to set the measure group s Type property to ExchangeRate. This property identifies this measure group for Analysis Services to use when building the MDX scripts required to support currency conversion. In addition to the special exchange rate measure group, your cube also needs a currency dimension to store the names of each currency and their ISO codes. The best way to make sure the required properties are set correctly is to change the Dimension Type setting to Currency when you are building the dimension using the Dimension Wizard. When you work with a Currency dimension type, you can specify the dimension table column uniquely identifying each currency and, optionally, the dimension table column identifying the ISO code for each currency. Your cube also must contain a dimension with Type set to Time. To finalize support for currency conversion in your cube, you can use the Business Intelligence Wizard. This wizard simplifies the remaining tasks to set up a reporting currency and MDX scripts that apply the correct calculations to measures according to your business requirements. You can even execute the wizard as many times as necessary if you have multiple conversion requirements. For example, you might need one type of conversion for sales results, a different conversion for cost of goods sold, and yet another conversion affecting financial accounts for international regulatory reporting. The simplest type of currency conversion is to apply an exchange rate to a measure, but you have two other options. You can develop currency conversions that apply to individual members of an Account dimension by name by using the Account Hierarchy option. Use the Account Hierarchy Based On Type option if you need to apply exchange rates to specific account types (such as Assets or Revenues, for example).
