By now, you should recognize that a single cube can be multifunctional. In effect, it can serve as the single source information for multiple workgroups or departments across your organization. While this centralization of information is beneficial for users, application developers, and IT administrators alike, it might be difficult for users to find their way to the information they need. Some might even feel overwhelmed by all the measures and dimensions built into a single cube. Analysis Services provides two features to better organize information for users Display Folders and Perspectives. You can use Display Folders to organize Measures into common groupings so that users do not have to look in every measure group to find the measures they need to analyze. The addition of Perspectives to a cube is another option for customizing the user s navigation experience by limiting the view of dimensions and measures to specific subject areas.

A cube browser lists the available measures by measure group. Because measures in the same measure group come from the same fact table, they are naturally related and often used together for analysis. However, for users who need to use measures from several different measure groups, the default organization of measures by measure group might not be convenient. You can create display folders to help users navigate measures just like a user hierarchy helps them navigate attributes. Before you spend a lot of time reorganizing measures by display folder, be sure this feature is supported by your client applications. In this procedure, you ll organize measures into display folders. Use display folders for measures and calculations 1. Click the Cube Structure tab, and then, in the Measure Groups pane, expand Reseller Sales. 2. Click Reseller Order Quantity, and then type Sales in the DisplayFolder property box. 3. Click Reseller Sales Amount, and then select Sales in the DisplayFolder property s dropdown list. Notice the folder name becomes an available value in the list box after you assign the first measure to this folder.

4. Repeat the previous step for the following measures in the Internet Sales measure group: Internet Sales Amount, Internet Order Quantity. Similarly, add Unique Customers (in the Distinct Count folder) to the Sales display folder. 5. Click the Calculations tab, and then click the Calculation Properties button on the Calculations toolbar. 6. In the Calculation Name list box, click [MEASURES].[Category Percent of Total], type Sales in the Display Folder box for this calculation, and then click Reseller Sales in the Associated Measure Group drop-down list. 7. Next, assign [MEASURES].[Average Reseller Sales] to the Sales display folder and the Reseller Sales measure group. The Calculation Properties dialog box looks like this:
In a production system, you should associate each calculation with a measure group or display folder to group the calculations logically, but for now you can leave the remaining calculations unassigned. 8. Click OK to close the dialog box, deploy the project, click the Browser tab, and then click Reconnect. 9. Expand Measures, expand Reseller Sales, and then expand the Sales folder.
