You already know that the purpose of an online analytical processing (OLAP) application is to provide users with valuable information to drive business decisions. Actions provide another mechanism by which users can gather information and take steps based on the information they find in cubes. You can add actions to a cube that will later be executed by users. An action is always initiated by a user and relates to an object in a cube. That object might be a dimension member or a particular cell, which is then used as a parameter for the action. Actions only work with some client applications, however, so be sure actions are supported before adding them to cubes. There are several types of actions that you can add to a cube. A URL action is useful for navigating to a particular Web site based on cube data. For example, you might want to visit a customer s Web site after viewing that customer s data in a cube, or you might want to access information from an internal reporting Web server to get more information about a particular product you re analyzing. If you re using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services, you can use the Reporting action to link a report to a cube object. This method is much easier to implement than URL access if all of your reports are accessed through Reporting Services. Another popular action type is drillthrough, which you can implement to provide access to detailed data that you don t want to store in the cube. The action generates an HTML page to

The Cube Designer in Visual Studio includes a tab for Actions. You use the form on this tab to define an action by specifying the action target, the action type, and the action expression that generates a string used to run the action. An action target is the portion of the cube to which the action relates and is the object that the user clicks to launch the action. The action expression is a multidimensional expression (MDX) that evaluates as a string relevant to the action type. Each action type has its own syntax requirements, but generally you include the MDX CurrentMember function in the action expression to link the object to the current cube context. In this procedure, you ll add a new URL action to open a Web page that contains a report for a selected product. Create a URL action 1. Run PublishReports.cmd in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\Microsoft Press\as2005sbs\chap10 folder to publish the reports that you need so that you can follow the procedures in this chapter. 3. Open the Cube Designer for the SSAS cube, and then click on the Actions tab. 4. Click the New Action button on the toolbar, and then name the action Product Detail. 5. In the Target Type drop-down list, select Attribute Members. There are several target types from which to choose. If you select Cube, the action will relate to the entire cube and you do not need to provide any more detail about the target. In the client application, the action will be available for all cube objects every member, every cell, every dimension, and every level.
