Strategic Content stores that are part of a pragmatic ECM strategy as discussed in 2 These may or may not all be from the same vendor, but collectively these systems have been identified as the go-forward systems for the enterprise Tactical Line-of-business content stores that are inadequate for a broad ECM infrastructure, but for various reasons will not be replaced with strategic ECM in the near term Replaceable Content stores that will be consolidated into the strategic ECM system in the near term

Transforming Infoglut!
he first step in implementing a pragmatic ECM strategy is an infrastructure of one or more repositories that can handle strategic content, and strategic applications This infrastructure will then support Web sites, portals, archived content, line-ofbusiness applications, and any enterprise application that needs content management This requires an infrastructure with a flexible, scalable, and extensible middleware layer This layer offers the most basic kinds of content management services that all ECM systems provide In addition, it offers a full suite of content services specific to your particular ECM system through a service-oriented architecture (SOA) to your unified platform A complete content infrastructure supports document management, records and retention management, Web content management, document-centric collaboration, digital asset management, and e-mail management functionality In addition, the content infrastructure needs to be based on a flexible, universal repository that can add support for future content management needs It should have a track record of expanding to meet new needs, as opposed to being just a patchwork of acquired technology Patchworks can only achieve a federated approach to content management multiple unique systems to configure, multiple unique systems to maintain, and multiple unique systems to learn Federation has value, but it can never provide the solid infrastructure you ll need for the future Additionally, ECM solutions should support an extensible enterprise metadata model, include tools for building content-enabled vertical applications, and leverage an enterprise security model for controlling and providing access to business content Ideally, a pragmatic ECM solution would use nothing but strategic content stores Unfortunately, most enterprise environments have a current state that includes not only strategic systems, but also legacy and tactical systems that must be addressed In 5 we will look into how such systems can leverage ECM tools in conjunction with the strategic ECM system to provide a comprehensive and pragmatic ECM strategy For now, we will deal exclusively with strategic stores and how they are used
The Three Types of ECM Solutions
Not all content is the same For example, Web content is updated as frequently as your Web site, sales forecasts are updated several times during the quarter, and a project blog might be updated every hour In contrast, a scanned

invoice will only have one revision, unless the scan failed for some reason Either way, once content is no longer relevant, it should be moved out of your repository to reduce storage costs and reduce clutter A strategic content management infrastructure needs to be able to handle all of these kinds of content These solutions can be categorized as follows:
Active Content Solutions Primarily knowledge-worker content that is actively viewed and is frequently updated Transactional Content Solutions Primarily process-worker content relevant to one transaction, and is rarely updated Historical Content Solutions Digital archives stored in specialized systems for auditing purposes
In the next few sections, we will expand on each of these types of content, the challenges they present, and which Oracle product to use to manage it
